Thanks for your contribution, boy! have you got a great Toolkit.
I love those TV adverts of the two 118-118 guys in running gear, black wigs and moustaches. What’s their slogan now?….Oh yes I remember….”GOT YOUR NUMBER!”

Just writtten a cheque out to Merloni Electtrodomestici UK Ltd for £99.88 with trembling hand.
What for?
Why just for the delight of looking up their parts listings for the next 6 months….!
When my next customer phones to say “What’s your Call-out Fee?”
I shall reply “£99.88, todays special offer Madam!”Martin

ParticipantRe: MAEL Drive Belts caution!
It is so easy to fall into this trap as I did with a replacement ‘Invicta’ Brand(Washvac) belt a year or more back. They listed a pattern equivalent for a Hoover belt they were out of stock of the genuine. I fitted this belt and 2 weeks later the bl**dy motor shaft snapped clean off. It was only then that I found out it was an ordinary belt and not a stretch one, they in fact had no business in supplying me in the first place. When I pointed out to them that it had ruined a perfectly good motor, they didn’t want to know!!!!!!!!!
Since that time I realise now that the “Rule of Thumb” in ALL cases, is that if the machine has a motor with no belt tension adjustment on it, that means it uses a S-T-R-E-T-C-H belt and no other should be fitted (even if it has the same size markings on it (i.e. 1180J5). Lots of them do have MAEL stamped on them but the likes of Bosch Belts do not so be careful.
I agree with 13amp in that these belts are generally thinner in appearance too!

Magnet on a flexy rod about 2ft long. Perfect for retrieving the nut and washer you dropped inside the machines cabinet.

ParticipantRe: Another Indesit timer clicking round
I am the lucky one! This time it’s an Ariston Washer/Dryer AWD10UK. You guessed it, the Prog selector goes round and round whilst all it does is fill. Cannot reset it, cannot drain it, bloody nothing but unplug it!
This baby has an Eprom soldered directly on the module board but according to Merloni the replacement is a Module with seperate eprom at the staggering cost to the customer of around £120 plus!!!
No way am I going to invest in getting a new Module (just in case it still does the magic roundabout on me) so my only choice is to encourage the young lady to go out and buy a BOSCH!
Would love to know the exact reason for all these failures though? The module board is long and thin, lousy plug in connectors, stuck on the deck near the damp floor. Is it any wonder they go belly up?

ParticipantRe: DASA Web site!
Whooops! I stand to correct myself here slightly. The web site hasn’t been up-dated as stated previously but what I failed to spot until now was the “The Members Listing” has. The lastest up-date being 12th Jan 2004.
I can now thrown away my old list of members which was dated 2nd Feb 2002 which I download around the time I applied to join. An interesting fact did come my up-dating though, in the period between, they gained 15 new members but lost 74.

ParticipantRe: Servis Quartz Error Code
Lisa,
My ancient records show that error Code F7 is simply a ‘Time Out’ error. But this could and almost certainly will mean a number of factors may cause this to come up. A component failure is the most likely, i.e. Heater, blocked pump etc. but nothing specific I’m afraid!
It will involve the need to get an engineer to look at it at least to access the overall condition and carry out the relevant checks. It’s old and could be costly though.

1. Are the hex screws welded into the spider?? broken hexes, broken drills, empty can of wd40 and still they laugh at meNot really but they might as well be, only solution= New Inner Drum
cornwell40 wrote:2. When I finally got the split collar out (the drilled groove method) and the new bearings in, put the sprung seal in place and ..Hey Presto Stuck solid bearings. Am i missing something or does the spring sit onto the inner bearing collar.
The bearings are aligned with a factory press, which is difficult to duplicate correct bearing set-up without such a tool. The spring does indeed sit onto the bearing collar (acts as a static discharge contact)
Best replace Drum Assembly in future I reckon. As penguin rightly points out (which I have since discovered) the Drum Assy carries a 5 year guarantee for Merloni to replace on a Labour Only basis. Left them have the problem!
There’s a new range of Hotpoint W/M’s coming out very soon, God ‘elp us!

No Lawrence, I’m just a sentimental old fool that remembers the old days when ‘field service engineers’ had it tough. The pictures come from Internet Archives on the subject.
