Do you actually need to renew the element or would just drying it out be enough to rectify the fault? I went to one this week that was shutting down at random times and resetting to the original start time reading. customer says if you leave the machine an hour or so it will then respond to the start button again then run for between 6 and 50 minutes before resetting again. I’ve asked the customer to try using the dryer then trying it again on a wash.

Yes, that seems to be the way to go. Keep the drum assembly from any machine scrapped for module failure and keep the modules from machines scrapped for bearing failure. I had a call from a little fish factory in Buckie this morning. They have an F13 error on their 4 month old Whirlpool and the warranty is null & void for commercial use. I said I would have a look but be prepared for the possibility that the machine may be BER.

That’s right. Any new rules will only affect honest traders as the rogue ones will just ignore them. At the moment Britain is fairly liberal in terms of legislation imposed on those who want to start their own business, particularly those who become sole traders. This makes it possible for people like me to relocate to another part of the country and still earn a living without expensive training or membership fees to some money grabbing trade organisation. I chose this trade but I could just as easily have become a window cleaner or chimney sweep or landscape gardener.
I’m thinking of moving to France for a couple of years but I know it will be much more difficult to start a business there.

Looks like you have to buy the complete assembly, C00096198 to get the front half.

Thanks for that. I suppose I could buy the black one, just use the one end piece and paint it white. It is a rip-off that you have to buy the whole thing rather than just the bit you need. 😡

    Re: Strange requests.

These days I would go and do his batteries anyway. I get customers who refer to me as “the plumber” eg. I hear the customer answer the phone and say “I’ve got the plumber in just now, sorting the washer.” Washer meaning washing machine, not tap washer!
This does mean that I sometimes get asked to do plumbing jobs but I mostly have to turn them down as my public liability insurance does not cover plumbing.

Re: Whirlpool spares – what a joke?

It’s odd, at one time I was getting loads of Whirlpools with bearing or spider failure. I brought home a newish machine with blown main module a few months ago, hoping to get another machine with bearings gone and make one good one out of the two. So far I’ve not found a suitable machine to BER so I’m still waiting. Perhaps it’s just as well though as it would be difficult to honour any guarantee on a secondhand Whirlpool.

    Re: heater element removal

I sometimes struggle for ages trying to get the rubber back in on an old heater and thought it was just my ineptitude. It is therefore consoling to hear that others routinely fit new heaters in such circumstances. One of the few neat features on the big drum Hotpoints is that you can take a paddle off instead of disturbing the heater.

At least you could strip it. With a welded drum it may have meant a BER machine.

Let us know how you get on with this. I had to change a door switch on one of these a few weeks back but a belt change looked like it might be a nightmare job.
