ParticipantRe: parking in the city
I suppose I’m lucky, I’ve never yet paid for parking to do a job. 😉

ParticipantRe: ARISTON AWD12 FILLING.
For machines less than 5 years old it would be cheaper for the customer to pay Hotpoint £104 than pay you £130 though.

Thanks Jim. I managed to get a secondhand one so will use that.

ParticipantRe: Motor Tester
Use a wire link to join one brush terminal to one field coil terminal. The other brush terminal and the other field coil terminal can go to live & neutral, either way round. Obviously you also connect the plug earth pin to the motor earth terminal . In this case the motor TOC was in series with one of the brushes but not all motors are wired like that. You therefore have to make sure you have identified the field coil wires correctly or you might be connecting to the TOC by mistake!

I opened it up and there’s a triac, a diode, 0.1mf capacitor, resistor, 500k pot. I think the reason for 3 resistors in parallel was to up the wattage, it was probably cheaper to buy 3 one watt than one 3 watt wirewound. I probably should replace the capacitor with a modern X rated type as it may have gone leaky with age.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint WF741 Pump filter
Can anyone confirm that these packs of 3 filters include the right one for the WF Hotpoints? Masterpart list a few Hotpoints using that part number but they seem to be obscure models like the integrated Indesit clones.

You could run it with the heater disconnected just to make sure.

Well I got the board out again and checked all the buttons again, all OK. The continuity is not required from the one I removed as the pairs are joined also on the PCB. I’m therefore back to square one. 🙁

Thanks again, Mike. They are certainly cheap enough 😯 . Better than £62 for a new board.

ParticipantRe: LG WM-1280FHD
The machine is in my workshop so I can work on it at my leisure. I checked the buttons and found the on / off one high resistance. The Hotpoint buttons don’t fit as they are surface mount so I didn’t have a suitable spare. I pinched the “time delay” one, on the basis that you should still be able to work the appliance without it. It’s still not working, although now I only have the 95 degree LED lit all the time. I’m now wondering if I should have soldered wire links in place of the switch I removed. They have 4 terminals but are only single pole. It could be the board relies on the continuity within pairs of switch terminals to complete the circuit even when the switch itself is not being pressed. I suppose I might adapt a Hotpoint button by soldering on wires but I’m thinking that is one bodge too far!

Thanks Mike. I did wonder if it could be a button. They are probably multiplexed somehow, hence the odd effects when you press 2 together. I wonder if Hotpoint ones fit?

I’ve not found that. When I was in New Zealand it would have been more than 6 weeks between orders. Connect sometimes used to ring me and tell me that I was supposed to order at least £150 worth a month! If they did that now I would tell them where to stuff their account. 😈

It’s not the best time to be starting up in this trade but I wish you well anyway. There should be no problem getting something sorted with Masterpart, although you would be best asking them yourself about available methods of payments. It’s odd, over the years I’ve had no problems opening accounts with national suppliers but local firms always seem to want big forms filled in, bank references etc. I would suggest you initially approach Masterpart with an order for common items like carbon brushes, tumble drier belts, pumps etc plus anything you need immediately for specific jobs. I think if you make your order over £60 you will get free delivery but not sure if that applies to all orders or just those placed online.
No you don’t have to order regularly. These days suppliers need all the customers they can get so they are not looking to cancel accounts. You could also try Homespares. They don’t stock everything but their staff seem to have more integrity than most.Phidom
ParticipantRe: I love adverts on the telly…
It’s not exactly satisfying work though. At one time I was going to the same customer about every 2 weeks to unblock the sump hose or pump stuffed full of childrens socks. I even got her a net bag but she obviously didn’t bother to use it. In the end I got fed up and sent a colleague to do it.

ParticipantRe: zanussi z1959t bearing kit.
It’s probably a letter I not a number 1.The hotpoint kit would not include the seal between the bearing cross and the tub. It would be better to use part No. 344703012 or equivalent. ZI959T is listed in an old Homespares catalogue I have. Their part Number is 7646.
