Did you solve this as I have one doing the same? The one I went to worked fine right through the wash then suddenly seemed to start an uncontrolled fast spin for a second or so then stopped with the start / pause light flashing. I checked the tacho magnet and it was secure. I then put it on a rinse and it worked fine again. It’s as though something is turning the motor on hard then the tacho circuit is detecting a fault and shutting down.

Four screws in all the ones I have done though.
Are you sure? There were 3 in all the shafts I’ve done. 😕

I went to fit a new rear shaft on one of these and found it did not have the screw on shaft plate but a bigger plate that’s riveted on. I ended up drilling out the remains of the old shaft and enlarging the 3 small holes in the back of the drum to allow the screws some clearance to screw from the inside. Is this normal procedure on these or is there an easier way?

ParticipantRe: Dyson washing machine stuck in test mode
How easy is it to change the PCB to rectify this problem? I’ve never worked on a Dyson but have now been asked about setting up an ex demo model using another tatty machine for spares.

ParticipantRe: EMW issues
Yes, I have also had good service from EMW. I’ve never bothered with Smart Cards etc, why bother when you can get a board that’s ready to use from EMW for less money?

ParticipantRe: Boy dies in Tumble Dryer horror
If he did manage to climb in and pull the door shut did he also manage to turn the machine on? I suppose some machines if left with time on the timer will start as soon as you shut the door. Sounds to me like a brother / sister type prank that went badly wrong. If just trapped inside and not running I don’t think he would suffocate unless he was wedged so tightly that his chest could not expand.

ParticipantRe: elux/zan/tbendx 1400 sole motors
If the magnet is still turning but is partly unscrewed it will be inducing a reduced output from the coil so it could think it’s doing 650rpm when it’s actually 1400. The output would also be reduced on the 50 rpm test. The electronics would know that the motor was being provided with enough energy to do 50 rpm but be reading a lower spin speed and therefore show a fault condition.

Yes, sounds like there are some burnt out windings in the armature.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Drum Paddles
Yes, I always explain that they come off due to a design fault. Fortunately I didn’t design the heap of excrement so I also don’t guarantee such repairs.

Thanks, I will take a look.

Customers are not all like that though. Some are so appreciative it can get embarrassing. Had a chap today who I’ve been going to for about 12 years, though that probably only equates to 5 or 6 jobs. He kept going on about how much he appreciates all the work I’ve done for him and his wife over the years.

ParticipantRe: scottish notes
Being English and living in Scotland I find this a real pain. I once went abroad and did not have time to bank the previous weeks takings so was going to change them into the local currency for use as spending money. Nobody overseas would change my Scottish money even at airports, they only accept English notes when changing Sterling.
When I go to Nuneaton on family visits etc. I routinely deposit my Scottish notes and withdraw English ones. This was easier when I banked with Abbey but now I’m with the Clydesdale bank which does not have branches in England. I now deposit my Scottish notes in my Nationwide savings account and draw English ones from the Clydesdale from a hole in the wall machine.
I will still pay bills for meals, rounds of drinks etc with the Scottish notes because once you have received such things you can just claim ” Well, that’s all I’ve got, take it or leave it.”
Most big supermarkets will take the Scottish notes but Debenhams in Nuneaton refused point blank, even after several minutes argument! I don’t know if Debenhams have a shop in Carlisle but it would be interesting to see if they could get away with such a rule.Phidom
ParticipantRe: They dont build em like that anymore – Part 20
I did some repairs on this Hoover 912 a few years ago but it came back last week. This time it was only a minor problem, an internal break in the mains cable where it enters the handle. The cable protector had perished and gone floppy so I found a suitable replacement off a more modern vacuum. I have some spares for older machines recently acquired from Bill Ellis who has retired. I knew there were a few armatures so I checked and found one to fit. The winding pattern is different but it is obviously the same size etc so I fitted it and it works fine. I can’t charge the customer for the armature but thought it was better to use it than it just eventually getting binned. I got a new 25 watt pygmy bulb and the machine is almost ready to go back. The only thing I have to sort now is the On/Off switch. There is nothing to positively position the switch in the handle but if not precisely square with the hole in the escutcheon there is not enough throw and it fails to switch off. I will need to put packing behind the switch to force it hard against the escutcheon. I don’t know how old the machine is but this model was introduced in 1950.

The annoying thing is that you can’t just take an exam and get qualified like for driving a car, there are hefty ongoing costs involved with staying registered. 🙁

ParticipantRe: Pat testing (a query)
The extension cables need a careful look as they get a hard life. Obviously you have to check correct wiring of them as well as earth continuity.
