ParticipantRe: You’re telling fibs!
I may have mentioned already the lady who wanted a new hose for a Dyson DC01. When she first rang she mentioned that she had already had a new hose only a couple of months before. I thought nothing about it, assuming someone else had supplied to previous one. I duly ordered the hose and she came to collect it (I had suggested that it should not be too difficult for them to fit it, although I ended up fitting it, gratis). When she arrived she again said about already having had a replacement hose, this time claiming that I had fitted it. I knew I had not ordered one of these hoses for quite some months so I checked back in my records. Sure enough, I had repaired her Dyson a couple of months before, I fitted a new On / Off switch 🙄

ParticipantRe: How much to charge for parts?
If I have to pay what I consider a ripoff price I try to still add 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} to the price I pay (not VAT registered). In some cases I take less than this rather than lose the job e.g. Zanussi bearing jobs I only add £20 if I find it needs a new spider as well as the bearings.
I see it as swings & roundabouts, you make money where you can. For example, today I fitted a new oven thermostat to a cheap & cheerful Jackson cooker. The genuine stat is about £22 trade + VAT but I used a Homespares universal one, 6949 which cost me £4.83 inclusive and I supplied for £20 + labour.Phidom
ParticipantRe: Beko WMA1512S low water level
How many times have you heard: “I don’t like this new machine, it takes 1 1/2 hours to do a wash!” ?

ParticipantRe: Beko WMA1512S low water level
Perhaps I also need to be educated. IMHO the old machines that used more water got the clothes cleaner. They probably also used less electricity as the programmes took less than half the time.

On some machines you can still con it into using extra water by starting on a wool wash then reseting it to your desired programme after it stops filling. Don’t know if this is possible on the Beko though.

You could try here:

ParticipantRe: hoover spin
You could look for dry joints on the PCB. It could be that the times it doesn’t spin it is also only turning in one direction on wash. Pressure switch and out of balance detection are other things to consider.

Homespares still list carbon brushes for that model, Part No. 4181. 😯

ParticipantRe: Hoover Drier D6418
One mystery solved but only to be replaced by another. Machine lives in an unlit shed so I failed to notice that the packet labelled 1910J3 actually contained an 1800J4 👿 I received the heater filaments and belt from Masterpart today. This time it says 1910J3 on the bag and the belt so it looked promising but this belt is far too long. The nearest other one I have is an 1897J3-EL. This only looks slightly shorter when held against the old belt so I will go back and try that.
The new heater does not come with the glassfibre string that threads through the middle. This string is also broken so should I try to get some new stuff or is it not important?Phidom
ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Door Seals
That’s the retainer that won’t fit my seals Bryan, I already have one left over from the 1st Edition job. 😛

Thanks Dave. It would therefore make sense if they only manufactured the grooved type. 🙁

ParticipantRe: Hoover Drier D6418
Thanks Dave. I’ve ordered the heater and I will try another 1910 belt as I have known belts to be marked up wrongly. It should not be all that much shorter than the 1956 but it would only just go round the drum, whereas the 1956 was dangling below the motor spindle.

ParticipantRe: HELP! Suppliers needed for Graded/Ex-catalogue White Goo
I don’t know if this is a general thing around the country but our local auction house used to buy pallet loads of assorted catalogue returns goods. There were always some whitegoods amongst the stuff and I was sometimes called to repair appliances so they could sell them on. I’ve no doubt that if I had wanted to take all the appliances off their hands and repair/sell them myself the auction house could have concentrated on the furniture etc that is easier for them to deal with.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Welded tubs
If that’s the price of the part then it will be cheaper for customers to get Hotpoint to do it within the first 5 years then after that they will almost certainly just buy a new machine. Bad news for us, bad news for the customer and above all, bad news for the planet. 👿

ParticipantRe: More New Faulty Elements
Is it just earth leakage problems? I ordered an Electruepart Zanussi fan element for a customer and he rejected it saying it was the wrong number of turns (I can’t remember if it was 2 or 3 turns now) I could not return it as it was what I had ordered but I was able to use it a few weeks later on some obscure make of cooker for which the correct element would cost around £40 trade. The Zanussi element went open circuit after about a months use but had not cracked or burst. I didn’t bother to return it but got a replacement from Homespares. Unfortunately this didn’t fit as well as the Connect one had so a bit of filing was required.
