ParticipantRe: How long do you give yourself for a job in a customers h
I start off booking calls at 1 1/2 hour intervals then slot in extra ones in between according to guestimated length of the jobs. This can mean that on quiet days I can be at a loose end between jobs but there are various things I do with such time like shopping, paying bills, changing library books and visiting friends. My callout charge covers them for an hour of work but obviously I can’t promise that the whole hour will be in one session.

ParticipantRe: Beko Module
Sorry, just looked on Seme and they list the same module for both models so it looks like the available part superseded the obsolete one.

The gravy thickens 😕 Just looked on Connect and they don’t list much for this model so tried Masterpart. They list part No. 92884212, described as “Timer Link / Direction Control”. There is no photo or price so I don’t know what it is.

Machine is now repaired, courtesy of Merv who kindly sent me a spare gear. Perhaps I can help him with an elusive spare part one day? Thanks Merv.  😀

ParticipantRe: Hotpoints new Parts policy
It sounds like some of you still do quite a few of the old toploaders. I’ve not seen one for at least 2 years, thank god 🙂

Thanks Martin. Do you have a phone number for them? I emailed them but had no reply. 🙁

ParticipantRe: Do you want cheaper fuel?
Ah yes, I just got back off a weeks holiday, suppose I should have looked at what’s been discussed 😳

ParticipantRe: Long Life Cooker is this a record.
My Aunt is still on her first gas cooker, I think she bought it in 1969 and I think it’s a Cannon. It has been regularly serviced though as my uncle was a gas fitter. She won’t change it as “the new ones are made out of cheap tin”. Down the road from me in Cullen is a bakers shop. They claim that the oven has been hot continuously for something like 200 years. They did change the fuel at one point from coal to oil but production was not affected. They reckon if it ever was allowed to go cold it would probably be damaged and need a total rebuild.

ParticipantRe: Disposal of old parts
The thing that concerns me is what constitutes waste? I always leave the old parts with the customer if I do the job at the customers premises but things like tub changes I do at the workshop. Fortunately there is a man with van who takes my workshop waste in exchange for other help I give him. The bit that worries me is collecting machines for potential reconditioning. Are these classed as waste? You don’t know if they will be repaired or scrapped until they are inspected/tested. Perhaps it would make a difference if I purchased such machines for a small sum, say £1 (at present I only take machines offered freely). 😕

ParticipantRe: Thirsty Hotpoint WM64
Went back to this today. Fitted the new switch and looked at the board. Sure enough, there were 2 bits of charred PCB but there did not appear to be any missing bits of copper strip. I scraped off the burnt material and cleaned the edge connector strips of the black plug. This seems to have cured the fault but I still don’t know what causes this, although it’s obviously a known fault. 😕

ParticipantRe: OLD appliances
I get the odd Kirby from that era. 🙄 I see ancient washing machines with wringers on the top now and again but have never been asked to work on one.

Yes, I would just fit a new pump, they are not expensive.
