Re: WF 740T – heater replacement

What module did you buy? If I remember correctly (IF i’m wrong i’m sure 1 of my colleagues will let me know) F08 refers to a stuck heater relay which energises the heater with no water in the tub.

I’m sorry to hear about that, Microwaves can be seriously bad news & allways treated with respect even when turned off.
Have you seen the CD Rom trainig courses in Microwave repair that are floating around ebay? how bloody irresponsible can you get.

If you drop them an email at the shop with all the details of what you want then the staff will tell you if it’s the right part for what you need, they are exceptionally helpful.

[ If I need to know if there’s 240 to the mains filter, then I’ll stick a mains tester across the terminals and not fuff about seeing if there’s continuity between the mains lead!

In conclusion, your “guy” had best get a desk job as he’s no electrician that’s for certain. 😈

Actually no he’s not an Electrician, he’s an “Appliance engineer” for want of a better description who apparently did his trade with a large company. Don’t know whether that’s true or not, but this guy and at least 2 others that worked for the same firm are of the same opinion & test in the same way.

At the bottom of the pipe from the pressure switch to the tub there should be a small pressure vessel, it is possible to have a blockage in this as the inlet to it is very small. You could also have connector problems or the pressure switch itself could be faulty, i’m afraid that blowing into it & hearing the clicks is no proof that it’s working. Also unfortunately you need to be aware that the Electronics on Hotpoint machines are Pants, you may be better off finding a good independent local engineer to test the machine for you.

Hi Martin: If you read post 3 it explains why I posed the question & the guy I had spoken to is not the only 1 i’ve come across that’s of the opinion that live testing of appliances is not only illegal but also unescessary.

Are there an Electrolytic capacitors on the display PCB? & if there are have you checked that none are s/c ? have had this problem with several display boards on different machines.

Hi: you don’t need a John Lewis authorised Engineer, you just need someone who is competent & familiar with testing Zanussi machines.
A local independent repairer would no doubt be more cost effective, you could try the UKWG repairs@ feature to see if we have an independent engineer listed in your area.

    Re: Fridge Not Staying Cold

It is possible that the defrost sensor unit is at fault, but the only way to be sure is by contacting a Good local engineer that’s familiar with these systems. You could try lookig at the UKWG repairs@ feature to find an engineer local to you.

    Re: Zanussi DE6744 cleaning

Hi: It’s possible that the pump which feeds your outlet hose is also gunked up inside, have you cleaned out the internal sump in your machine? You should find a small removable grille in the base of your machine, if you remove this there is a small sump underneath that can get clogged up with fatty gunk.

PLEASE REMEMBER POWER OFF & PLUG OUT FIRST.

    Re: Megger testing

O.k as your determined to get into your machine with a Megger, first & foremost: POWER OFF & PLUG OUT before opening the appliance, getting :zap: can seriously ruin your day.

When testing your heater disconnect the power leads from the heater, put the insulation tester on it’s highest continuity range needs to measure at least 50 ohms (Not insulation) place leads across heater terminals & read heater resistance, this value will depend on the element wattage but all you want to know initially is whether the element has continuity, if it has then proceed to the next test: Connect 1 meter lead to 1 terminal of the element & the other lead to the element Earth, set to 500 volt insulation range & test. Keep your hands well away from the leads when testing, you need to note the resistance shown on the meter. This should be in the high Megohms range.

PLEASE BE WARNED THAT USEING A MEGGER OR OTHER INSULATION TESTER INCORRECTLY COULD DAMAGE YOUR MACHINE OR CAUSE YOU INJURY.

Before carrying out any testing though can you explain the problem with your machine any further? i.e are there any lights on (power etc), does anything happen when set a programme & close the door?

    Re: Live testing

I tried explaining to him that if you know how to test properly & have good test gear with quality leads, probes & clips then your perfectly safe. But it fell on deaf ears, I regularly work on 3 phase systems & carry out live testing on these so there’s no way am I going to change my way of testing when working on a washing machine / dryer etc.
Suppose in the end it all comes down to how your taught & the type of test gear you use.
Know what you mean Dr Dill, had some nice tickles of Unearthed sinks, machines etc.
