PS. I am not averse to getting smelly or covered in good ‘honest’ sh*t, I worked full time on a farm for six years and spent many hours helping out at weekends and evenings for years after I came into this trade. 8)

    Jim.
Mr Weinstock, bless him, shredded my old company of Ruston & Hornsby in the late sixties just after I had served my apprenticship, many hundreds were finished.
    I left and joined Electrolux!
When I worked for them a call to look at a vacuum cleaner ,3 months old, “we think weve pcked up some dog dirt”tipped it over said yes I ‘ll agree with that.
Sorry,I’m not doing that one,and left.

I don’t know why so many of you feel under-valued. I get a lot of respect and recognition from the vast majority of my customers. Perhaps that’s because I’m totally independent, though. Never have had to lie about my opinion of a manufacturer or their products in order to keep my job. Truth is, it only took 6 months training twenty odd years ago to set me on this road and I’m still learning every day so I find it hard to think of myself as a “professional”. That’s a term I associate with doctors, lawyers, teachers and tarts. This is a niche business in that it’s escaped regulation. I think one reason is that the trade is small, there’s not that many of us, some of us only have one foot in this side whilst doing other stuff (e.g. plumber, electrician) to earn a crust. That makes it difficult for the authorities to pin us down, to define who we are and what we do, and not worth spending millions on to try and regulate us. I’m happy for it to stay that way.
The odd rogue is going to be there, come what may. I reckon that started in the 1970’s BC, not AD. For the most part, customers don’t need the BBC to tell them there’s rogues out there. They’re all too well aware of it. Once they know you, though, their fear of trying new people works in your favour. As has been said many times on here, do a good job for a reasonable price and you’ll set yourself up with a good customer base in the long term.
    Mike.

I’m quite often out ans about, not feeling on top of the world and customers give me a lift either by being plain decent or appreciative of my efforts, getting long in the tooth but always something to learn, never like being called an “expert” as some customers do because that sort of implies you have all the answers which we all know is not the case.
Have followed a “rogue” on a couple of jobs in the last few months and was unsure when confronted by a machine that had clearly not been repaired correctly, deliberately in my opinion, have decided in hindsight that should I come across this again I would advise them to contact trading standards,it’s about all there is avalable.

    Re: Cold fill and energy.

The miniscule amount of water now used for the wash cycle would mean in an average house the distance of the washer from the boiler would mean that the hot water would be unlikely to reach the washer and get left in the pipes,ie like running the tap waiting for the hot water to appear.
Think we were always told that warm/hot water tends to set stains on clothes as opposed to starting the wash with cold water.
Probably the vast majority of households on the old header tank for hot which produces a problem with back pressure from the cold supply when mixed although would presume this device prevents that.Mixer valves on the
American top loaders, with mixer valves sometimes suffer from that although just thought it would probably be worth it for the water guzzlers perhaps, they usually end up washing more in cold or just of cold.

What do you need to know as it’s a straight forward machine, very well made and reliable as it’s age proves.
    Rob.
It’s so old it isn’t on the Merloni site but I have a parts list and diagram if you need it

Thanks,it’s for an old lady who, doesn’t even after all the years she has had it really understand what she is doing, just though the instructin book would help her.

One was a hotpoint/creda free standing cooker with the twin grill elements one of which was not working, the one that was, was hanging down between the brackets with cracks showing the insulation.
    He’d ordered one,so got a sale out of that,bonus 🙂
Second one a HTPT WT 761,”door seal to fit”drum looked decidedly low through door, suspension retainer had come out, suspension spring behind soap draw assembly broken, motor virtually on the floor!straight forward diy job!

Started the week thinking “it certainly isnt worth it” better by Friday,a few decent jobs and customers who make the job worthwhile.
Thursday got stung by a wasp on the neck whilst doing 60mph in traffic, livened things up for a minute !
Hardly advertise at all so don’t get many new ones which is fine as I close on two years to go milestone.
Can’t make my mind whether to pack in completely or still do a bit when I’m 65,will wait till I wake up on the morning, hopefully 🙂

If there is a judder then silence it’s more likely the compressor especially if it’s doing the same thing with a new relay, presuming correct part has been fitted.
Compressors sometimes don’t move well, expensive to replace £180 ish.

I say to them…I know what your doing this weekend then…somewhere on the net it states theres a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow..i ask them if there going looking for it…lol

Depending on my mood my reply it’s usually “well you won’t be needing me then” or if they say “I know what it is,it’s the thermostat” I reply “OK I’ll change it then shall I ” their confidence usually evaporates fairly quickly.
I think I’m becoming more like Basil Faulty by the day, 😯
