ParticipantRe: Contract Van hire – any thoughts?
If you buy outright, the entire cost of plant & machinery (including vans, but not cars) is eligible for tax relief in the year purchased (assuming your total capital purchases are less than the current Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) of £500,000. After December 2015, the AIA returns to £25,000.

Sorry, Ken, what is the theory you are trying to put forward here?

It’s worth pointing out, Don, that the UKW news article (2nd of your links) relates to the FDW dishwasher recall covering the newer Indesit manufactured machines, not the earlier Bosch manufactured DWF machines being talked about in this thread.
Indesit seem again to have slipped this latest recall announcement out very quietly, apparently last November. I’m pretty sure this is the first mention of it on UKW.

ParticipantRe: Pay a contact
I used Pingit last year to collect payment from one customer. There seem to be a plethora of other similar services being set up by other banks, eg Paym from Santander.
With Pingit, it was easy for the customer to pay, but a right palava to get hold of the money. I was in the customer’s house for a good 20 minutes going through the various set up and verification processes to get the money transferred from Pingit. From memory, if you don’t go through the process within a few days, the money goes back to the customer.
So for me, these services are a last resort. Fine, maybe, for friends and family, but not for business transactions.

I think there are two main factors:
(1) Retailers like Currys, AO and John Lewis have been engaged in heavy promotions and a price war with some machines probably being offered at below cost price. People whose machines break down are as a result less likely to explore repair as an option, particularly if their machine is getting old.
(2) National providers like D&G, Repaircare, British Gas and the manufacturer’s networks have been promoting themselves heavily on Google, enabling them to take a higher proportion of the repair market, and some cases no doubt farming the work out to independent repairers at derisory rates. Yes, their up-front charges are high, but their fixed cost and insured offerings attractive to some customers.

Just to confirm, I fitted the new heater relay yesterday and the problem is resolved.

Very interesting, I’ve never come across these water regulations. Reading around, it seems these are mainly to do with minimising the risk of contaminating the water supply. The risk is, if the water supply pressure drops, contaminated water from the washing machine could be sucked back into the water supply through backsyphonage. I came across detailed guidance here:
Interestingly, washing machines in catering establishments are also subject to additional requirements. Most domestic washing machines are category 3, whereas catering establishments require category 4 and healthcare, category 5.

Perhaps selected by the Daily Mail as it seemed one of the craziest design ideas of the 100 shortlisted by Electrolux? Clearly by a student with some knowledge of science who doesn’t have any idea about laundry or dirt.

I do feel for you gandh1. To answer your question, I guess one lesson is never to quote a fixed price for a repair. Always make it clear it’s an estimate. If the customer tries to pin you down on a precise figure, tell her the cost could be higher if unforeseen problems come to light.

ParticipantRe: Radio 4, am I the only listener?
The points Ken and Andy made in response to the questions asked were fair enough. I do feel however that focusing on how quality and lifespan have come down does little to help the white goods repair industry, as it reinforces many people’s perception that machines are not worth repairing. Banging on about how manufacturers overprice parts doesn’t help either.
Shouldn’t we be emphasising that a high percentage of faults can be repaired cost effectively? For me, the proportion of jobs I don’t complete because the cost of repair is too high is only around 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. Not many people complain that the parts are too expensive.
Manufacturer’s take no notice of what we say about parts prices. They set the prices according to what people are prepared to pay. That’s probably why some manufacturers, eg Whirlpool and Bosch, have adjusted many parts prices down in the last couple of years, in response to market demands.

Thanks for the tips, Seamy. I’ve now established for sure it is an intermittent heating problem. I’ll report back on whether the new heater relay fixes it.

ParticipantRe: Miele G641 I PLUS
Thanks, Seamy, for the suggestion. The customer uses Finish all-in-one tablets, so I had pretty much discounted lack of rinse aid as the cause. She’s since run another cycle through and confirmed it runs the full program but is not hot at the end. I’ve already checked the heating circuit as far as I realistically can, so I’m plumping for an intermittent heater relay as the most likely cause.
It would be great if someone could post information on the service modes on these G6xx and G8xx series Miele dishwashers to enable the fault codes to be accessed, as I don’t think this has been shared anywhere on the forums so far.

Your account must be on the best discount level already, I guess. I think you’ll find if you order two, you still pay the lower price.

I applaud the patience shown to this gentleman so far. The precision of his postings, extreme courtesy and attention to detail suggest he may have a personality trait such as autism or OCD. The last thing he needs is to be accused of being a troll.

ParticipantRe: Scrap machines, worth anything
I noticed that if you start the application process on the Gov website, that even if you say the waste is from other businesses, organisations and households, but you say you are taking it as part of another service or trade (eg plumber), etc, you are still directed to the lower tier “free” licence.
So no clever tactics are required to avoid the charge! It seems that it’s only if you are collecting waste as a service in its own right that you have to pay for a licence.
