Re: Problem with an AEG Competence Oven

    Hi Mark.

There is usually a rating plate around either of the door apertures or if is an undercounter oven it will have a rating plate on the top of the appliance so you will need to ease it forwards slightly from its housing to get at it.

As for the fault, have you tested the elements for both continuity & insulation? If not you will need to do so with a relevant test meter. Please isolate the product from the mains electric supply before any work is attempted. Also, you say the fan is not working, is that correct? The motors don’t usually blow in my experience, usually the shaft seizes or they can get noisy but it is possible. It could also be the selector but that is assuming it has one.

Really the model, serial & product number would be needed first as without that, we are p1551ng in the wind.

I would suggest that the hotplate being used when it trips is most likely at fault. As for them not getting as hot as you think they should, that is rather more difficult to comment on as I get people say all the time things don’t work as the user thinks they ought to & it then turns out they are working to manufacturers spec.

It usually sets pretty quickly, assuming you have used Debor. Give it enough time for a kettle to boil, let your cuppa brew & drink it before you water test & that should be fine.

Where the end LED blinks, that is a fault code. Count how many blinks there are before it stops & starts blinking again & this will give you the fault code.

If there are no error messages shown, it could be a number of things from motor brushes to the pressure sensor &/or switch to the heater to the main board. The codes the user usually sees are: E10 (fill problem) E20 (drainage problem) E40 (door problem & E90 (electronics problem).

    Hi Gandh1.

I have had several instances recently of random aborting of cycles. When you go into diagnostics you are confronted with the fault code E31 or on later electronics Ed4. When you test the dry heater initially for insulation it seems good but when you run a full diagnostic & get to the drier part of it, let it run for 5 minutes & if it doesn’t abort during the test, retest the heater insulation & you invariably will find the insulation has dropped like crap through a goose. If the reading is 10 MegOhms or less, the main board doesn’t like it & that is, in this example anyway, the problem.

Of course, it may not be that. As it is aborting partway into the wash you may be correct that it is not that at all but the customers I have had did not report a fault on dry as they all said that they hardly used the drier function which I believe is the reason why the element fails.

    Just my two penn’orth.

If it is most of the cycle it will almost certainly be the circulation pump. Either an object in the impeller housing or it is leaking through the bearing seal & the bearing is running dry. In case 1 it should just be a case of removing said object (Isolate product from electrical supply first please) but in case 2 the circ. pump will need replacing.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

Just a few off the top of my head here:

    1) People who ask you to phone a mobile number before arrival which you duly do but can only leave a voicemail message. You arrive at the call & surprise, surprise, no one is home. You try number again & this time get hold of customer who claims to know nothing of any message & wants you to wait “10 minutes” which turns into half an hour.

    2) Customer gives you product details for a completly different appliance to the one they want repaired & moan that you can’t fix it. To make matters worse, you charge them a call out fee & tell them that if the repair doesn’t go ahead for ANY REASON they don’t get their money back. You later find the part they need is obsolete & they moan like hell that they want their money back.

    3) Customer has put a tumble drier in a cupboard about 5 foot plus above floor level with no room to either side & just expect that you are Hulk Hogan & can move it out & back when it is fixed with no help.

    4) Customers who book either an AM or PM call for an appliance & when you turn up are using the appliance in question & utter the immortal “I didn’t expect you at this time” phrase.

    5) Customers who book a call but leave their relative on site to let you in who speaks no English & you have no way of contacting the person who booked the call in the first place.

    6) People who book a PM call & are on the phone at 11.59AM demanding to know why you haven’t arrived.

If you can fit a bicycle chain, you can do the belt. The only things to do aside from isolating the appliance from the mains supply is to correctly route the belt around the tensioning pulley on the motor although this is just a matter of common sense as if you don’t, the belt is slacker than my mother in law’s knickers. 😆

Well, it could be the main control board but it is just as likely to be that the dry heater insulation has dropped below 10 MegOhms which causes the program to abort. You will need to isolate the product from the mains electrical supply & disconnect the wires from the dry heater element which is housed in the duct above the tub & using an insulation meter i.e Meggar, test the dry heaters insulation. If it is below 10 MegOhms, that is most likely your fault right there.

When you removed the circlip, was it sitting in a groove in the drum shaft that goes though the rear bearing? If so, the 2 metal shims go between the circlip & the rear drum bearing.

The model & product number would be needed before any proper assesment on the fault could be made. It will be on a plate near either of the door apertures.

One thing you could have tried was to wind the timer around to where you hear a distinct click where the defrost starts & you could have seen if the heater started to heat up.

I would suggest to check the sump hose, which is the one that goes from the tub to the filter manifold, is clear. If so, the next thing that I would do is remove the manifold & clear the air chamber which is where the hoses from the pressure switch go to. It can be awkward to clean but it is do-able. If all the above fails to clear the problem then I would think you have a dead spot on the programmer.

Before doing all the above, please ensure that the appliance is isolated from the mains electrical supply by whatever means.

The 240 volt AC shuffle is a horrible dance anyway.
