Re: Supply Point Earth Loop Impedance Testing

I have found this very interesting reading… especially since I have never done and ELI test and wouldn’t know how to. 😳

I use a socket tester just to make sure that the appliance is going to be earthed once fitted. I have only started using a Megger in the past year and I wouldn’t profess to knowing the full usage level of that. :rolls:

The lack of information relative to correct testing for varying applications is unbeleivable considering the amount of concerned government departments out there. (Not getting at cigarette smokers, this is just as a point) Goverment departments prefer to spend money on counter-cigarette advertising for those that choose to harm themselves by smoking, rather than to provide decent training or information to a trade that can give somebody a free safety service to complement the service that we are actually paid for. 😕

Getting the equipment to do these tests is not the problem, secondhand callibrated units are about £50 – £100 for a decent Robin, but finding out how to use them properly is not so easy.

I’m an electrican he anounced, your just an washing machine repairer and I should stop frightening customers.

You may have seen the issue I had last week about the lack of earth to an appliance socket… This led to a similar situation when I reported it to the electrical department of the Housing Trust involved.. The head electrician got on his high horse when I asked when the tests were last done on the property. He told me that in summer last year there was a percentage test done. I told him why I was asking and he immediately started asking what equipment I was using, as if that made any difference; (a missing earth is a missing earth). The electricain wanted proof and qualifications, so I told him that I had no electrical qualifications and he got very snotty, so I then told him I had photos to email him of the socket-test and of the missing wire, to which he laughed… He soon stopped laughing when I asked for his email address to send him a copy of what I had sent to HSE. 😈

This is the reason I think for the large amount of interest in the thread that kwatt had running about the training. I think there are an awful lot of us (a lot more than are owning up) that don’t know enough and would like to learn.

Did you check the cable for the motor for breaks in the wiring?

Re: ISE 10 F3 check this!

Every day I see machines that when they have reached 60 deg are full of soap suds yet the drawer is empty when I place the machine on test .. Generally caused by washing on too low a temp for the detergent and so it sometimes solidifies in the base of the drawer or on the ridges of the spider behind the drum.

If it is this then great, if it isn’t then ok ignore what I am saying as I have no experience of ISE machines as yet.

Ask your customer to do a 60 deg FULL wash with no options selected before you go out to the machine. No detergent, no bleaches, nothing, just water.

    Re: Recycling & Recon Forum

    Thanks for that Ken…

The reason I wanted this forum to become part of your system as well as the one that will be on my own new site when it goes live is because of the hightened interests of Defra, Wrap, and EA, along with many other national & local governmental departments into everything WEEE related.

The appliance repair trade is also increasing its interest in refurbishing used appliances to suppliment incomes. It is necessary therefore to highlight both current laws and future law changes to individuals or groups involving themselves in relational aspects of the WEEE treatment or recovery processes.

As many of us are trying to change or abolish regulatory fees for approriate licences required for WEEE related operations within Appliance Repair and Recovery Trade; all your ideas, complains, and open discussion may go some way into helping mould a new way for the relative governmental departments to deal with refurbishment regulations and their fees.

    I did Mike.
The relay is available but with a 1 year lead time and you have to buy 500.
A friend had 30 or so old boards that were not working so I gave hme the postage and he parceled them all up for me… Guess what… out of the 30 or so boards he sent, there where two boards with the same relay and one of thse relays worked…

    Job done 🙂

Re: crosslee whitenight may have a problem 🙁

I have had this before.. albeit a very long time ago… As I remember, the cause was the motor overheating the wiring and the wiring set alight.. and it was on a crosslee type whirlpool dryer.

    Thanks guys…

I didn’t know if it was just me being too kind in not charging the old gent as a few remarks came toward me that I was stupid to do the work without payment.

I also had the feeling that I could not leave the old man with possibility of injury.. if something had happened I would have felt really guilty.

You have confirmed what I thought and I will get in touch with the Housing Trust tomorrow to give them my opinion on the matter…. I may also decide to request that they pay a bill of £90 .. Yet again I may decide to contact HSE as this could have been lethal.
