ParticipantRe: Van Servicing
Amen to that !!! Citroen – what a load of Merloni ( whoops – Freudian slip – err…utter crap). Can’t wait until my lease is up. They’ll stitch you up at every turn. Don’t get me started……..
(Deep breath and a Vallium)… You can get your local motor engineer to service your van as long as he fits genuine parts, is VAT registered and you can get a VAT receipt for the job. This way it does not affect your warranty status. The law was changed to stop the main dealers cornering the service market. I had my first new van leased from Citroen, and for the last 2 years of the lease I had it serviced by our local mechanic – he was faster, cheaper, friendlier and not related to Dick Turpin like the dealership.
£94 for a set of front brake pads inc fitting for a Citroen Dispatch van?? 😯 . I didn’t want to make the thing worth stealing!! So I enquired if they could possibly requote me for non – gold plated brake pads instead. 👿
Local engineer – oil change + flush, new front pads, collect and deliver back – £79 all in: AND back by lunchtime. 😀
That’s independents’ service versus manufacturer. 😉 No contest.
If you want to check for your own peace of mind call Trading Standards or The Society Of Motor Manufacturers And Traders (Tel. 020 7235 7000) either will be able to tell you. 8)aqualectric

Stoves oven eh?
Had similar probs with a Stoves double oven with same type of fan set-up as yours late last year. Oven was fitted TIGHT into the cabinet, and when it was pushed back in, the back panel of the cabinet (cupboard) was flat with the back of the oven and the fan was suffocated – the centre of the fan was completely covered ie:- no air flow. It worked OK at the time of my visit 🙄 but I had removed it from the cabinet before I switched it on.
Couldn’t find an obvious fault but it finally dawned on me what it was! 💡 💡
Marked the fan position on the inside back of the cabinet and chain-drilled loads of holes in a circle. Then I removed the circle to leave a large hole through to the void left behind the cabinet.
Refitted oven, unrestricted airflow, no problems!!!! 😀 Aren’t kitchen fitters great?? 😆Hope this helps,
Steve.

To find out why liquid detergents cause these problems, contact Rob Dray – detergent trainer on this site. I learnt a lot at his presentation last week. It’ll certainly help you to explain why this happens and how to prevent it. Liquids are also a major cause of the growing number of foul smelling machines. 😉

The little green fan belt on the back- is it worn and stretched? Was it off when you dismantled it? Change it in either case. Both cause a loss of volume of air over the heater; ie stats switch on / off regularly = very low heat in the drum. Also, make sure the belt is refitted in a ‘figure 8’ shape. (there’s a diagram of this on the back of the plastic cover plate). If it’s fitted in an ‘oval’ shape it will run the fan in reverse giving the same result as a slack belt – low air volume. Check the felt guide is in place under the green fan belt to stop the belt from fouling on itself where it crosses over ( figure 8 )
Don’t forget the condenser – could be blocked as well. 😉Hope this helps!!!

Does it have a cabinet cooling fan (usually located on top of the oven cavity at the back)? Does it spin freely? Is there power to it? Have you seen it running (or felt airflow from front of the oven above the door when oven is on)? The safety stat will usually cut out when the cabinet ‘overheats’ due to no airflow from this fan. Oven will go dead until cooled enough.
First, check cooling fan motor and supply. On some ovens a small stat (n/o) runs it so check that en-route. (It will be wired to the cooling fan motor). The stat will switch the cooling fan in at a predetermined heat (40-50 degs). To run the cooling fan without heating the oven up, switch off mains, wire out the stat, then switch on mains again. When the oven is turned on, the fan will start immediately. This stat could be at fault.
The circulation fan-failure safety stat is the one above the oven heat circulating fan; ie cooking fan. This is needed in case the circulating fan motor fails and the fan element gets too hot; it’s quite often a one-shot). Should test n/c.
The safety stat for the cabinet is usually on top (or near the top at the back) of the oven cavity. It is also n/c. When the oven cuts out, switch off the mains and pull off the 2 wires and connect together. Switch on mains, and the oven should start up again.
Hopefully this will help you find the problem!! 😉Steve.

ParticipantRe: Water Softner The Pros & Cons
If the water softener is working correctly, then very little or no salt should be present in the water going to the machine. Like a dishwasher softener unit, the salt is only used periodically to ‘regenerate’ (or clean and flush) the resin bed that does the softening – the resulting salt solution is discarded down the drain on completion of the softening cycle. Saline does not come into contact with the crockery at all. It is actually quite safe to drink softened water. There may be very slight traces of salt but not enough to taste it. ( Is the water they clean their teeth with salty? The bathroom basin taps will almost certainly be supplied with soft water).
The reason they do not recommend to run a washing machine from a softener is usually due to the large amount of water required by a machine; therefore the softener’s flow rate may be exceeded. Problems arising from this would be outside the control of the manufacturer of the softener.
Could the damage to the washing machine and the resulting blockage and sludge be down to use of a liquid detergent? Broken spider problems galore with Hotpoint 95 and WM series a few years ago were all because of liquid usage. Machine probably smelt bad too!??
Hope this helps!!! 😉Steve.

ParticipantRe: TC470 Door Lock Cables
If all else fails, swap the broken cable with the ‘reversed door’ catch cable ie: the unused one. This will definately fit and solves your problem. 😉

You’re absolutely right, EFS. It’s a scandal and it flies in the face of the WEEE regs as well. Also, if we change a drum for a customer (assuming they are daft enough to go ahead with the job on a machine that has proven itself to be completely cr*p), do we leave the drum assembly for them to dispose of? It is, after all, their property. How does that figure? And under the new regs, how the hell do we dispose of such large chunks of machine? I can’t even get into my local tip with hedge cuttings!!
Can we somehow put this as a sticky in the public forums under the heading ‘friendly advice’ as we are not lying or slandering anyone or anything; we are stating irrefutable facts. Customers will eventually find out the truth either way. I am finding more and more customers are not happy with the ‘3B’s’ approach (buy it, boot it, bin it) and are increasingly asking me to recommend higher quality machines. Most seem happy to pay more to get better machines. Maybe the tide is turning?aqualectric

Many, many thanks to Sean Delaney and Rob Dray for a superb presentation today. Good work!!! 😀
So nice to see there is still life and passion left in this business – and the rebuilding of the community spirit that made this industry so interesting in the past. UKW is the only way we as individuals can redress the balance against the mercenary manufacturers and ruthless multiples. Probably the only way we can have any sort of voice at all. Almost a mini Trade Union! We were introduced to the ISE machine at last; excellent guarantee package and machine looks quite easy to strip down and fix. Some concerns were expressed about it’s ‘Beko’ roots; but frankly, what is it competing with? Probably only German made Bosch and top price AEG/Lux/Zan machines. Competes and beats them on level of service and guarantee terms. Better than Merloni / Servis / Candy bargain buckets? Shouldn’t be too difficult. Also, the absence of ‘brand image’ and possible customer indifference to the ISE was raised.
But remember when Dyson started out with a new concept, – the ‘dual cyclone’ cleaner. That machine was different, and very expensive against it’s rivals – but triumphed because it was the complete package that people really wanted that no other manufacturer was offering at the time- the buyers just needed to be educated about it. Did the price put people off? Only the ones who wouldn’t have bought it anyway; but look at the tens of thousands who happily paid out £200 for a cleaner. The ISE is no different.
I’m proud to be associated with UKW and would like to thank all the administration staff for their continuing efforts. I look forward to the next meeting.
