    Was is it with WD40?

Why do customers think that spraying everywhere with WD40 will cure all?

The only thing wrong with the machine was worn brushes… until the dreaded WD40 came out. The customer squirted it everywhere… timer, motor, fill valves, door lock, bearings, suspension… you name it, it’s dripping in it!!!

    Re: Hotpoint TDC30 T/Dryer

If you have an infra red thermometer, you can read the temperature that this stat cuts in and out by pointing the thermometer at the square rating plate that is situated half way up the back panel above the bearing cover.

If you run the machine without any clothes it should start cycling within a few minutes. It’s a good test and it impresses the customer. You can tell by this test if there is a problem with the stat, if there is an air leak on the rear drum seal and if the heater is cutting out on reverse tumbles and on the tumble cool setting. (I normally use a clamp meter on the live or neutral lead to the timer to test heater current at the same time)

I do this test as a matter or course after any repair to to a condenser dryer.

The thermometer I use is available from Connect part number LAS3540 (£16)

    Re: Does size matter?

The particular machine I am have in mind is the Electrolux EOB944. The Beko 262900006 element is virtually identical, same wattage rating, same diameter (almost) and the same terminals.

The fan was running with about clearance 2mm from the original element. I have replaced the fan with one from a creda oven which is about 10mm smaller diameter.

The reason for this post is to ask if it is safe to mix’n’match fan elements on cookers or is it concidered bad practice?

Next question… where is the ‘best’ position for the thermostat file?

Some machines have the thermostat file behind the element and some in the cavity away from the element.

Re: How do you drain off a flooded WMA?

    Can’t do it without a bucket, but here’s the method I use…
    :lesson:
Acquire a strong piece of polythene sheeting , a strong bin bag will do.

Using packing tape, stick the polythene to the front of the machine around and below the door opening. Funnel the loose end of the polythene into the bucket… (If you’ve got one 😉 ) and then open the door… slowly. The polythene will act as a funnel and all the water goes into the bucket.

Not sure of the answer on a machine with a pneumatic door lock though.

Many of the answers are already there.

Many of the questions answered on these forums have been asked… and answered before.

I have often used the search facility on the site… from the customer’s house… on my laptop or my PDA telephone. If the answer is not there then it only needs a question posted on the forum and there is normally an answer within a few hours.

The customers can not expect much better that from an independant engineer! They would not get that service from many manufacuturer’s service networks.

Hats off to UKW … to coin a phrase.

Make sure that they have the right tacho magnet though!

An analogue tacho magnet is different to the digital magnet. I would suggest re-using the magnet off the displaced armature to be sure.

Re: HPT mistral baffle / fridge thermistor (FF72)

The fridge thermistor is situated inside the control housing and can be seen when taking the cover off to see the baffle motor. The wiring can be accessed by removing the top cover.

By memory, 1/2 inch opening of the baffle sounds about right.

I have a copy of the service manual for this model if you need an expoded diagram or further information.

You can test the baffle motor my turning the appliance on with the fridge door open. It goes through a self test, including operation of the baffle motor.

I don’t do refrigeration appliances now but I do remember this test sequence.

Re: How much to charge for parts?

I normally use Connect’s SSP which the customer can often see when looking over my shoulder when ordering on my laptop.

If the customer sees the price over my shoulder and I think it is too low, I normally add VAT to the SSP.

Some of the SSPs on Connect are way over the top though (and some are really low) For example, EGO energy regulators have SSPs of £45 – £65.00, with trade prices of about £10! fit even one of these to a hob and you write the appliance off!

I feel that as long as I am making my labour charge and at least 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on the part then I am making a sensible profit on the job. It’s pointless risking writing off a machine just to try and make a silly profit on a part.

The other point is that it is difficult to suddenly reduce the price after you have quoted, when the customer is umming and erring about the price; If you suddenly reduce the price by, say £20, then the customer may get the feeling that you were trying to rip them off in the first place.

I have been known to get out of this situation by suddenly finding a cheaper supplier. 😉
