tempted always to walk away but then think it has cost me so much to be here…….
usually regret pursuing these in the end though.

Smeg model that one. Usual reasons are blocked fan blade (fluff in the gaps between the blades), no water inlet on dry, front drier ntc (in bellows between heater and door seal) covered in fluff upsetting its readings. Have also had fan motors intermittent start up- just sit there humming instead of spinning and next 10 times will work fine or as you suggested, faulty resettable toc or connectors producing its own heat.

Do you know any dryers with ball race race bearings, Martin?

Sadly these days they are a rare beast. In fact only dryers with metal drums have ball race bearings. The modern plastic drums are more likely to opt for phosphor/bronze bearings and the reason for that relates to the need to eliminate static electricity. (Phosphor/bronze far better at that than ball race units)

But I really don’t need to tell you this as you already know the answer I suspect. 😉

not sure that’s the main reason Martin… think cost has a lot to do with it as well. The problem with the roller bearings is they are always just above the heater and suffer with the grease drying out. Drums supported on roller wheels seem the most reliable option but are as noisy as hell in use.

    Has anyone had this fault?

very common problem and one sometimes complicated by the compressor overloading and cutting out due to the brief switch on time.

A quick Google search reveals that a Martindale test is in fact a measure of the durability of upholstery fabric.

and what WP started this trend then………. Amica maybe?

on the subject of martindale, it does anoy me when wp’s ask for “martindale readings” on job sheets. Its just a trade name and they produce a whole heap of test equipment with the same name. Yes, I know what it is and most here do but does everyone understand that?
