    sounds like the socket is faulty also

    from what I can think anywhere you remove material is going to make it worse

    why did you change the pump?

    if the old pump was rusty and the coil had gone it will have blown the traic on the board. also tends to blow the 2 resistors that trigger it
    can be fixed by pinching part from an old board but there is a chance the main processor has been damaged as well, in which case new board only

    how does the door handle feel

    does it seem to be stuck or does it pull all the way out but the door still does not open ?

    the john lewis brand is supplied by Electrolux but they own Zanussi, Aeg and Tricity Bendix so this unit may be supplied under any of those brand names

    sound like a main pcb problem. if you have any electronics knowledge first check is the board power supply

    take the brushes off and make sure the are long enough. new brushes stick out about an inch but can work till they get to about quarter inch

    have you checked the motor?

    if motor is out of circuit such as brush failure. loose socket ( may have moved it when you did the heater ) some machine react like this

    when you say it operates to a point which point ?

    does door lock
    does it fill
    does the drum turn etc

    they will fail continuity test as they are capacitors and the black is prob just dirt attracted by the 400 volt dc charge. the other component is a diode. since these components are part of the board power supply the board would be completely dead if they had failed

    this sounds like a board fault

    need to see the board to say more

    if you want to post some pics of both sides of the main board will take a look
