Multimeter?….have you not tested it with your 500 volt insulation tester (aka Megger)? No because it never leaves our main engineer’s side… im out to this one because hes booked up to the weekend, and the customer was going to go elsewhere otherwise.

But do please tell me what the “current” reading from the pump was anyway?sorry not current – you know what i mean if you connect a meter to both terminals, and turn a motors spindle you generate electricity. i cant give you a figure because it varied with how fast i spun it…

Me too, but before you go that far, how does the motor seem to you, does it megger up OK? Are there any signs of wear to the motor harness? Brushes OK are they? Heating element OK? All of the above are a real caution and need checking closely. 😉as i said performed all basic checks – i.e blockages, carbons and wiring all checked ok, pressure chamber checked (due to overfilling), heater element ok for circuit, couldnt meggar it as you can guess, so could only check insulation between earth terminal and points. no oxidation on motor (at all!) to suggest water damage… anyway went for the jugular and dismantled timer cams to get access to board and found track to a 3 legged component blown right off (triac ?!)
anyway stated replacing components would be more than half cost of new machine – board 75… trade and even a board repair would still end up being well over the repair threshold… and then wed have to fidn the component that caused it to fail

ParticipantRe: whirlpool awm337/3
fair point actually 😉
so pump might well be knackered anyway but its motor or timer board time then… ? if i knew before going out about the appliance tripping i would have left it, but just sounded like a blocked pump on the phone 🙁
customer is on benefits and can only pay up to 70 quid to get it fixed so wanted to check here for a second opinion because i hate having to condemn machines as it is, but im not gonna spend more than an hour on it if general concensus is that itll be a write-off, and gut feeling that the customer will be “relaxed” about paying any call-out.

DAD are currently running the Gorenje GV62110 12 place @ £189 in three`s.
Slimline is another animal altogether, it`s such a low volume seller the prices remain rather high.
Don
try and tell the customer that… quoted for the gorenje fully fitted and get told i cant afford that!
i said it was a good price, and she goes im only wanting to pay a maximum of 300 pounds… i said boxed? and she goes all in. my turn to scoff!
“ok i might wait during the sales then…” she’ll be lucky then…

ParticipantRe: wasted callouts
the ones that get me the best are the ones who agree to:
call out + parts repair. go out to it, heaters duff but rest of its shot *lack of info on customers part*
so its irrepairable and you say i wont charge u for the call out as long as u purchase a replacement of your choice from us. i would recommend xyz appliance at xyz price.
ok ill think about it
2 days later you check if they want to go ahead with your suggestion because any later than wed and u cant get it in before the end of the week for them, and they say oh ive ordered xyz appliance from elsewhere because it was £35 cheaper fitted online. i was only expecting to pay (half of quoted price for new machine). i dint know there were that expensive…
ok so ill send you the call out invoice for £55 then…
“what? sorry! but u didnt fix it. im not paying for a repair you couldnt fix?!”
and so so. blah blah argument…
the annoying thing is now at this time they reckon they can get an appliance from a net only shop in before xmas…. snd fitted – without a surcharge. if comet and currys wont guarantee it i doubt anyone else can…
what bugs me mroe are the customers who refuse to pay for the call out and then claim to refuse replacing the machine as they can do without… that REALLY gets me
oh and it just bugs me because theyve used our advice to make a call on an old machine and now havent even bothered to consult us before ordering a new machine. i really dont want to go down the route of trusting a customer to be honourable, but its getting to breaking point where if i dont charge a call out fee on booking i will get shat on more and more… 😈

ParticipantRe: A letigious Society ?
i dont know if its worth noting, or valid but i never order a pcb, motor, or other high value spare – in fact anything over £35 trade, prior to the customer paying for it up front. been bitten thrice too many times by my good nature… our job is to get the machine back on the road. if they want to squabble about whos paying its up to them, but it wont be me any more because the customer can have my receipt as proof work has been done.
had it last year where a gas cooker (new world g50si) for a tenanted property failed on install. unknown to us it was a known issue on about half their production run. we wanted n/w to replace with diff gdha alternative. they refused as they wanted to fix it. 3 attempts at fixing over course of 8 weeks, and they still didnt sort it. we said they should now pay for the uninstall and reinstall of a new rep cooker. they refused saying they offered a uplift. proper night mare as they eventually conceded to uplift(!) but we had to pay for the uninstall/reinstall by the gas safe engineer. i said they could get one of their engineers to do it instead but they refused. then it gets better because of the hassle the tenant witheld 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of her rent for that month (£65) claiming it was due to breach on contract which the letting agent insisted on deducting from our invoice, because the contract of sale was with us.
therefore we have paid £115 for this cooker, invoiced for £175 delivered, paid for one of the corgi engineers we use for our gas cookers to install it for £62, along with supplying a replacement £120 tricity and so we paid out £265 in total, 6 hours of mantime @ £10/hr exchanging and being at the property to let the gdha engineers in and supervise and took £175 back meaning we made a total loss of £150.
yet gdha wont think of entertaining paying any of that even though they have knowing allowed distribution of faulty appliances, and not even bothered to recall them so they can be reworked at there own premises.
ive given up on chasing them as i have to wait 10 minutes on the phone then have to spend 20 minutes explaing everything from the off even time i fone to chase up whats going on. just wondered legally where do they stand?
