    Thanks Dave.

Apart from checking and if need be tightening all the connections on the module ( with the plug removed of course 😉 ) not much else you can do. Welcome to the world of the disposable washer, courtesy of Indesit. 😥

    Re: Serious Windows wmf.exploit threat.

Your problems could well be related.
It is not an Internet Explorer fault, it is a Windows OS fault, regardless of your browser/firewall/AV, if you use Windows, especially XP or Server 2003 you are at risk. It is not a trojan that installs spyware, it is far worse than that. It is a serious flaw in a Windows component that allows all kinds of nasties, worms. trojans, keyloggers, spyware etc, etc to be installed. You will get little or no warning. you can be infected by viewing infected sites, via e mail, by opening pictures or related documents etc. This really is a nasty one.
And to all the Firefox groupies, if you have Windows it can get you.

If a maniac was coming down the street with a gun and my garden wall was 1 metre high but yours was 2 metres high, I’ll bet that if I offered you a bulletproof vest you would take it. 😉
The real problem with this is that some idiots have released code for this exploit that makes it very easy for the most gormless script kiddies to use. 😥

Re: Amusing Anecdotes & Other Tales

Many years ago whilst at Hotpoint I got a call to an elderly lady’s tumble dryer, complaining of poor drying performance. ” I’ve had it on for over 2 hours and it doesn’t dry, I put it on for 10 minutes, then another 10 minutes, then another 10″………………. 😀

Which is why I’m safe. 😉

I install nothing now that I don’t know exactly what it is I’m installing. Been there, done that, got the “DOH!” t-shirt many, many times. 😆

    K.

I have to say that I have (to date) never had a virus or any other intrusion on any PC. But if you could see all the various protecion I use you would possibly call me paranoid, or very careful.

I posed a question regarding Firefox to an expert on this exploit on another forum, here is his reply.

“Anyone using Firefox is nowhere near being completely safe. The advantage of using FireFox is I understand it does not automatically display WMF images like Internet Explorer. FireFox merely prompts you to download/open the image which if you were to do would allow your computer to be compromised. Your friend could potentially still be compromised by viewing an email in say Outlook Express that had a WMF file attached.

It is also worth noting that while the problem is with WMF files, the problem could still occur if someone saved a WMF file as another image format so be wary of ALL images. WMF images could also be contained within Microsoft Word documents amongst others so you will have to be very careful.”
    …………………

Martin. I have the unnoficial patch installed and the .dll unregistered and have had no problems whatsoever.

    Re: Serious Internet Explorer flaw.

I could quite possibly have erred in my title for the thread, which I will alter. Even with FF or Opera and all the AV and software/hardware firewalls you can have, if you do not close this loophole and you are running Windows, particularly XP or server 2003 you are vulnerable.

    Re: Serious Internet Explorer flaw.

Well 80 views but no replies, has anyone been hit by this yet, I know of at least three people who have all the latest firewalls/Av software etc that have been infected. The best advice at the moment is to install the unofficial patch and also de register the .dll as described in my previous posts. There are now over 100 varients of this code, most of which are not picked up by AV or firewalls. Microsoft say their patch will be available on the 10th Jan. In the meantime you are all at serious risk from this exploit.
I have installed the unofficial patch and it has caused no problems and my PC nows scans as safe from the wmf.exploit.
Patch can be found here http://handlers.sans.org/tliston/WMFHotfix-1.4.msi

This can be easily uninstalled once the patch from Microsoft is available.

11 flashes is ‘supposed’ to signify that the pump is faulty. The PCB does auto test most components before the machine will run, however these machines have such troublesome, unreliable electronics that the fault codes are at best a first place guess in most cases 😥

    Note to the general public

Live testing of the machine is not advisble. :zap:

Sorry, I may have misled you the actual timer in your machine is a 1701221, the Hotpoint model it also fits is a TL71.

Same timer, 1701221 fits Hotpoint TL71 if thats any help. I don’t have a manual for that model. How did you manage to get wires off the timer doing a belt/pulley change. I tip these upside down and just remove the small lower front panel, then pull the front panel forward to allow the belt to slip round the drum. Never touch the facia or even remove the top to change belt.

That part number includes a new back panel, needed to prevent the fan fouling the old panel. you need to change all parts. (ATM)

Not easy, access to timer is at the bottom, behind the plastic kickstrip. A Torx screwdriver is required. Not something that should be attempted if you are not sure what you are doing, and although it will get rid of the water it will not solve your initial fault. Be sure to remove the plug.

At a cost of £96.00 plus vat and labour, who would be stupid enough to spend that on an Indesit that was more than likely under £200 to buy in the first place 😥

Need full model number, if it is one of the later ones then the answer is with a saw. 😥 Completely sealed outer drum unit.
If it is a W101UK/B you are stuffed.
