Well that’s the info I was looking for. Thankyou Dave and Mark.
Was a bit impatient and sent board to Tony already so I’ll see what he makes of it but looks as though I’d better get a thermistor ready anyway.

I wonder how many of us are working in “territories” overlapping each other possibly by scores of miles. If we could all get together and agree we could shrink territory size and still all have enough work. Maybe when 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of work comes via “repairs @” this will be possible. (“You may say I’m a dreamer…”).

I’ve had to change quite a few AEG old type pumps which leaked. Was this just because AEG machines last longer, enough time for the pumps to fail or were their pumps not “decent quality”?

Chris. Would you say they are that much worse than the old ones? And don’t forget they use 30 watts as opposed to 90 although they may take longer to pump out a drum. ❓

IMO Mal, lots of people lead stressful lives and drive when they’re tired which probably causes far more death and injury than a repairman making the occasional error which he might have made anyway, even after plenty of rest. I don’t think our profession is that much more dangerous than say a shop assistant driving home tired. How many people are killed or injured by appliance faults in a year? And how many of those are due to negligence of repairers? Compare with road deaths/injuries.

    Re: hotpoint wma32

Pumps can go intermittent. Usually it’s due to wear in the impellor end bearing or lots of crud getting inside the barrel. Sometimes though a magnet type pump can get a bit warm (maybe due to blockage or poor water flow due poor installation). The plastic barrel can melt slightly making the rotor foul on it intermittently. With the price of a pump being about £3/£5, I agree with Phidom, it’s worth replacing it when there’s doubt as in this case.
    Mike.
PS: If you want to be sure you’ve got the right diagnosis you could run the old pump on a flying lead stopping and starting it a dozen times allowing it a few seconds to fully stop each time. If it stalls just once out of twelve it’s likely a dud. When you’ve got the old pump out, check bearing wear and pull out the rotor to check the barrel condition. This takes very little time, much less than driving 3 miles back to a re-call

Re: Evironmentaly Friendly??? Keeping repair costs down

True what you say of many of the young. But it’s no less true of many of the old in my experience. We see the overflowing kitchen bins of all generations. There’s a lot of debate going on in the greenie sector and it’s spreading gradually out into the poulation at large but no-one really knows how to fix these problems.
Waste is just one aspect. Incinerators are common on the continent. But we are wary in this country of going down that route. Incinerators don’t actually achieve much except to concentrate all the most poisonous elements of the waste into a lightweight, difficult to handle fly ash (from the filters in the chimneys). That stuff can only be buried in specially approved landfill sites which hopefully won’t leak for a few years 🙄 . Only real solution would be to avoid making waste, and especially toxic waste, in the first place but we have hardly even begun on that long road yet and time is ticking away as all the landfill sites get filled up and nobody wants to have a new one near them.
Anyway, I could rant on for hours about this but if anyone is interested they only have to look at Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace websites etc. or perhaps look at Newsnight archives for example.
As repairers we can at least claim to be doing a little bit to alleviate the situation by trying to reverse the throw away mentality and advocating durable design.

Hoover and Hotpoint pressure vessel blockages and element failures. Rarely get those now 😥 since moving to this soft water area. But get plenty of spider rot.

    Re: Zanussi FLE1216W Noisy

Had this fault on Candy/Hoover a couple of times. No significant play was detected in dampers but replacing the one on the side where applying pressure to drum top during spin caused noise to cease cured the fault.
Hope that makes sense. Try reading it three times if not.

do these tube have to be dry when cleaning finished…
    cheers

Get a bicycle pump with small tyre valve screwed into the flexible pump connection. Attach long bit of pressure switch tubing to valve. Gently introduce it down the hole and blast away a couple of times or three.
Admittedly I’ve only had to do this once but it worked for me.

Once system is clean pump out machine so fill starts from empty. Don’t think any drying is necessary but it’s best to check fill/empty 2/3 times before leaving obviously.

any thoughts on the not heating for wash?

I don’t need to even look as I know it is heating on wash by virtue of the fact that the machine completes the full wash cycle. If the heater wasn’t working it would stick on the wash part of the cycle and would not rinse or spin. 😉

Or is there something like an “economy” option selected?Or possibly an ntc/stat malfunction allowing prog adv at lwr temp?
