You get these greedy ruthless bas*ards in every trade im afraid, i think they may do even more damage to our trade though.
I mean, if you get ripped off by a roofer or a plumber, you will certainly be more choosy next time, but youre still going to call one.

Our trade is different in that the customer has the option of simply deciding to replace a problem appliance rather than risk another bandit entering their home.. and who could blame them having read Martins tale.. 🙁

She who must be obeyed has been dabbling with various detergents & 30 deg washes recently but has decided she aint convinced & has returned to hotter progs ( so i’ve been told)

A hint of persistent odour noticed while ironing my work t shirts left her un convinced with cool washes 😯 so my fault the environments going down the pan 😳

I guess if you think way back to the ones with mechanical timers, shaded pole drain pumps & main pumps which lasted more than 3 summers they were a good wee machine for the money.. nothing stays the same in this life though.. :rolls:

Well, get the details posted on the new sticky timdowning suggested 114! & lets all try to beat the blighters. Martin, go get your old fellas whirpool off the tip.. 😆

Martin, Ive seen loads of recent Whirpools with the very same fault, so i think we can definately put the current circ boards firmly in the file marked ‘crap’ 😉

Jackal, its an interesting point you raise regarding the choices people make & whether they deserve what they get for being so tight.
Some people go through life buying everything on price, thats for sure, i think we’ve all been in kitchens full of Servis, Indesit, Beko etc.

I do feel sorry for people who do spend a bit more on a once trusted brand, zannusi being a prime example, and find it too becomes BER within a few short years.
If i had a pound for every customer who when faced with this situation told me they intended to ‘just buy the cheapest & bin it next time’, i’d have quite a few quid.

What has driven this trend? greedy sheds, greedy manufacturers, tight customers ? i dunno, but we are where we are, i just hope i can make it through next year.. ( 12 calls this week 🙁 )

    Re: Whirlpool shame:evil:

What i dont understand with the likes of the boards fitted to the Merloni garbage is, why it is cheaper for them to fit 2 truly awful PCBs instead of adopting the single, pretty reliable little board which seen service on the WMA range.

Cant ever remember changing a WMA board which failed for a non external reason, ie door lock, motor carbs arcing etc.
The simple fact is though they’re all guilty of fitting crap, built to an absolute minimum standard PCBs, i too have seen 2/3 year failures on practically every make.

The thing is, it all makes sense for them, make the customer think they’re getting a super deal.. a Zanussi 6kg 1400 for £230..!!! Wow, we’ve never had it so good thinks the punter, her old zanussi cost her £400 14 years ago, wow, how do they do it !!?

Well, we all bloody know how they do it with their sealed tubs, mickey mouse electronics & 3 year lifespans, & so our punter gets drawn in to the buy cheap & chuck cycle the volume producers love to promote.

The irony is of course, £230 x3 (if shes lucky!) = nearly 700 quid over her next 14/15 years so its just an illusion of value, as we all know.

Whats the answer? i wish i knew, but i can honestly say i’ve given a huge amount of thought over this last year to having a total career change, i’m quite simply finding it more & more difficult to see a future in this game.

Sad thing is i will truly miss it if it comes to that. 🙁

    Re: New Sticky

Could well be useful, though personally i dont think i’d be confident to replace much more than a relay or resistor on the average board.

Having said that, overpriced electronics & sealed drums are the two main tools the greedy mass market manufacturers are using to further their ultimate goal.. totally disposable white goods.

So yes, anything we can do to thwart the greedy pigs appeals to me.. now all we need to discover is a REALLY good glue to stick outer tubs together.. 😯

    Re: EMW, 6 MONTHS,NOW NOT 12?

I think everyone here who has used EMW for many years appreciates how stable the prices have been, as engineers we’re faced with the same dilemma, namely how to repair a product at a price the customer finds acceptable & offer a reasonable guarantee.

I just feel with the average £200 entry level Merloni its a lost cause , corporate greed & the throw away culture will prevail at that end of the market, but hey, it keeps factory workers in a job :rolls:

    Re: Servis m9614 stammers

Ironically, had an M6614 today with a similar fault, was shutting down for a second or so with the lights going off just as the motor attempted to turn the drum, it would then spring to life again, same as yours??

Strangely, it would run fine with the belt off so im assuming mod is failing under the high start current.. but it could be another component of course.. 😯 EMW do them, & you can always return it. 😉
