ParticipantRe: vauxhall astra van or estate 1.7 td year 2000
The cylinder head went on my Astra 1.7TD @ 65,000 miles. Finally @ 98,000 miles the engine blew up totally and I’m having to fork out Β£2,100 to have a new engine (factory recon) fitted π₯

John,
You answered Daves question with your heart and soul attached as well and we all thank you for that. We all share your heart felt reasons for doing the job that we all share with you. The abiliity to be able to go out and fix something that is broken and to make money from it is our only driving force. Job satisfaction is more guaranteed in our game that in any other I reckon and that is what holds us to it.
As to the downturn in the work, I can only hope you can hold on a while longer as things will improve. Just read the headlines in the press for a moment, the public cannot afford to shop in the High Street, sales are on the downturn and costs are increasing. That will mean more work for us in the long term, inflation and a depressing economic forecast will be our overall saviours. History is repeating itself and we in the whitegoods business will be needed more than ever sooner than you may think π

ParticipantRe: The Old Twat!
The front page is a great advert and I suspect with the attention and interest it will no doubt create they will be spilling out into the car park on the Friday at least!
As there will be many new faces on the scene, would it not be an idea to have ‘ Lapel Name Tags’ for those that attend that may wish to be recognised?

ParticipantRe: Ariston keeps filling water.
I don’t have AB88X on my Ariston list but if the dial does have a ‘Black Dot’ on it in about 3 positions, then that is the ‘reset’ positions. Set it on that spot then hold the on/off start button in for 3 secs or so ’til the light remains constant.
Beyond that I strongly advise getting an expert to check it out. We may have a local independent in your area if you click on this link: Repairs@

priceYou won’t be surprised to know that we get asked these questions time and time again and on a daily basis. In fact the answers are spread all over these Public Forums in one form or another with the same conclusion.
None of the aforementioned headings go together on any whitegoods product unless you select from the higher price product bracket. If it seems cheap then it is cheap in all respects and you will suffer, beyond that you are on your own.
Naming actual brands and models within that brand is a nightmare for anyone to predict as to what will happen when you get it home and plug it in, and as to how long it remains serviceable.
Dig deeper into your pocket is my advice. 8)

Yes I know Kevin, as this must be devine retribution for my cheek or something about my last posting on the subject, but my van engine blew up today (Con Rod or Piston went clang…black smoke…dead stop!)
The countrys 4th Emergency service got to me in 25 minutes and towed me to my local Vauxhall dealer. Within one hour of breaking down the men in white coats at the garage were peering into the engine compartment, rubbing their chins in unison and tut tutting π
“We might be able to fix it or it might need a new engine?..Its only done 98,000, still never mind eh!…probably have a look at it on Monday or Tuesday maybe. That’s a bit of bad luck for you isn’t it sir?…is someone going to pick you up or would you like us to take you home?”
Must dash…got to dig the push-bike out the shed now and pump the tyres up. 3 calls postponed today and re-booked for tomorrow provided I can make up a bracket to sit my toolbox on the handlebars………..!

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint 9514 wiring diagram
I think you will find that whilst the terminals on the 05(168887) and 06(169100) are identical, they are designed for the 9534 series machines and fitting to a 9514 will not work. π
Plus you will need to fit 9534 Knob to it as the programme settings thru 360 degrees are different π

John Lewis are well regarded in the High Street as a quality store, their reputation follows them with the selection of whitegoods with the own label on.
They are a good quality product made in the Zanussi factory. π
