Energy performance labelling (based on EN60456) uses the 60deg cottons cycle to determine the energy efficiency of each appliance. Using the Miele wash cycle times as an example, a 3.5kg load takes 2hrs 59 mins consuming 0.82Kwh. However a 7kg load takes exactly the same time (2hrs 59mins) and consumes 0.94Kwh of electricity. So,irrespective of loading the cycle times being pre-determined, perhaps to ensure the perfect wash, but make little provision for half loads. That’s not an energy efficient approach.

The “simple physics” you refer to is not adapted by the IEC/EU directive in determining the energy performance standard, quite the contrary. In fact they use a highly complex series of formulae based on years of laboratory testing just to prove today’s washing machine uses, on average, 37{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} less electricity and 31{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} less water than machines produced in 1997. What they have failed to overlook is the extended completed wash times these regulations have created. That the size of load has little effect on these wash times and that the dramatic increase in wear and tear limits durability of the product overall.

The 1997 machine washed quicker and lasted far longer. Was more adaptable to small loads. Often washed them in half the time. A family wash could be completed in half a day (tumble drying included). These days a typical family wash takes best part of two days due to the fact that both washing machine AND tumble dryer take more than twice as long per cycle. (This paragraph statement has no scientific basis whatsoever, just simple observation based on hands on experience )

You’ll find all makes take just as long to complete a wash cycle. Hours instead of minutes. Miele wash programmes go on for hours. Miele are one of the worst for cycle times. For example at 7kg load of cotton towels will take 4 hours to wash. Super-Eco friendly they ain’t!

Precisely, that is why I am puzzled as to why I’m listed as a member?

It’s the magnet float under the mesh filter in the plastic tub that needs taking out and cleaning. Be sure and put it back the right way.

SMEG – induction hob not identifying pan

Andy jones wrote:Is it suitable for induction hobs

It’s cast iron Andy and, as you know, all ferrus metal cookware is suitable and should operate. Whereas copper, pure stainless steel, aluminium and glass pans won’t.

If however that cast iron pan is too small for the cooking zone then it won’t work.

    £400: Washing Machine?

3 yrs extra warranty for 65 quid has to be a flipping bargain. A no brainer as they say. 😀

Oh the nostalgia of it all. Monty Python’esk “when I was a lad”….”back in my day”.

I wouldn’t mind betting Jim is still changing the odd gyrator cube ‘up north’. I have a few kits left and a brand new reamer should you run short Jim. Though flogged my last countess pump on eBay in December. I only have 1509 pumps left (and one 1850 timer knob) 🙂

The Siemens Wm14e362gb comes with a 5 yr warranty for under 350 quid. I got one from Euronics for 329 (cash) last week.

That would indicate the module is not getting the pulse signal from the impeller jug. So it’s either a connection problem between the two or the control module itself at fault I would think.
