Thanks Martin. I don’t have an account with them at present but it would be useful to open one. I will give them a ring tomorrow. 🙂

I tried for ages to get a part for a Swan carpet shampooer but gave up and admitted defeat in the end. There was a phone number in the literature for spares but it was just an answering machine and they would never ring back.

Yes, Hotpoint have gradually gone from having the easiest belt fitting access/design on the 95 series made in the ’80s to one of the most difficult, on the WMA machines.

Yes, you should be able to drain the machine by gravity with the pipe at floor level unless there is a sock or some such blocking the outlet hose from the drum. Once you have the water out you can look in the filter etc for an obstruction. As for the belt coming off, this often happens if the drum bearings have failed and the drum pulley is wobbly. Also inspect the V grooves on the belt as any damage can cause the belt to jump off.

    Re: Is it just me….

Beginning to realise the importance of finding out just what is required before starting a recon. I have been asked to supply a load of cheap machines for foreign workers on contracts in the local factories. I had picked up a Hotpoint 9545 for this purpose. I had gone to deal with a ” not spinning” fault which turned out to be the belt come off due to wobbly drum bearings. As the machine was 15 years old the customer decided not to get the bearings done but buy a new machine and give me the old one.
I stripped the drum, put new bearings in but also found the bronze bush was cracked on the spider. I found another spider, put that in, drum as wobbly as before. Take a look at replacement spider and find the front bearing has been turning on it, hence the play. Raid another machine for a 3rd spider which is OK.

Start putting the belt on and realise that the rear motor bearing has also failed. Find another motor I can raid for an armature, put it all together, no motor action. Get the meter out, motor TOC open circuit. Motor to bits again for a replacement TOC. How can a TOC fail the same time as the belt is falling off? 👿

Thanks Dave. I can get the Washvac info. now, it seemed to come up blank when I tried earlier. I will have to select an element based on dimensions/wattage. 🙁

Perhaps there is a US equivalent of this site that could help? I suppose folk in the States are afraid of giving advice though, in case they get sued. 😉

I suggest you tell the customer that “you can’t get the spares for these old models”, sell them a new cooker and I will buy the old one off you for spares 😉

I have not tested it out but I’ve been told by the module repair firms that most manufacturers will not entertain any claims for faulty modules or timers unless installed by their own people.

OK, just to get the ball rolling so to speak, I will start.

Being on my own I have always dealt with the problem myself and used a varying number of methods to achieve the aim. In almost all cases I use the ‘strap method’, that is a length of blue webbed strap and tension buckle (the sort of thing truckers use for securing their loads and stuff). Uncouple the dryer from its stacking kit, lift it one side to slide in the strap then tighten the buckle (at the back of course) with one hand behind the strap at the top. Then lift up, over and down on the deck.

    😀

I’ve been to plenty of stacked appliances but never actually seen a stacking kit in use. The dryer is usually just dumped on top. If I only need to change thermostats etc I often leave it there and just rotate it to get to the back.

Not much storage space for tools and spares. If you know of an immaculate Moggie Minor van going cheap though, together with details of a good signwriter…….

You can use a 13mm ring spanner on the back end of the suspension pegs to depress the lug.
