Re: Browsing ebay, came across this WD440 drum for £20 in No

That is one advantage of taking in machines for spares / recon, you do accumulate a range of secondhand parts. This means you can offer a more cost effective alternative to new parts and the customer gets the appliance back in action quicker. About 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the replacement motors I fit are used ones. They do take up space though, in my case they are in the workshop, 2 garden sheds and also stuff in the house loft. I try to keep the garage as an appliance free zone. 😆

I sell the odd recon. machine and rarely get any complaints. I’ve never advertised them though and usually I offer them as an option when the customers old machine is BER. There are a few landlords who are regular customers for such machines, again sometimes supplied after I condemn an existing appliance. I am careful what machines I sell though, mostly Zanussi and the old small tub Hotpoints. I do sometimes get called back to repair machines I’ve sold but customers seem happy to pay for the repair if the 3 month warranty is expired.

The last one of these machines I went to with similar symptoms it turned out to be a lazy drain pump which was putting it into a fault mode and shutting everything down. Has it ever stopped with the machine full of water?

Some of us are trying to work out ways to replace welded tubs with ones that can be dismantled. I didn’t think anyone would want to do the opposite. 😯

Re: Whirlpool AWM8163GB Vibration, drum bounce

No, does not sound like bearings then. It could be something more serious, namely a cracked arm of the drum support spider. This is the part that is attached to the back of the inner drum and has the drum shaft at it’s centre. If an arm is cracked, the crack opens up when subjected to the centrifugal force created by spinning at high speed, making the inner drum rub on the outer drum. Unfortunately you can only confirm this diagnosis by visual inspection of the spider i.e. by dismantling the machine. Whirlpool spares are very expensive so if the spider is cracked it is probably not cost effective to repair the appliance.

In good times when there’s plenty of work I would agree with you entirely, Martin. At the moment, many of us don’t have enough work so we can have a go at these things to fill up the spare time and hopefully save a bit of money. It is also quite satisfying to do proper repairs rather than just putting in a replacement major assembly. Once or twice I’ve ordered a replacement module from EMW without looking properly at the old board then been dismayed to see the problem was a simple dry joint, easily rectified with a blob of solder. There are also a lot of boards that EMW won’t touch…..

It is very unlikely that the suspension units have failed. Make sure the concrete weights have not come loose. Turn the drum by hand to see if the movement is notchy. If it does feel notchy, remove the belt and try again. If the drum still feels notchy to turn, the drum bearings have failed. If it now turns smoothly, the motor bearings have failed. Also try to hold the outer drum and check for up and down play between the inner and outer drums. If there is significant play this also indicates drum bearing failure. As usual, unplug before removing any panels.

Re: merloni board heater relay location

Once removed from the board you can test these relays using a car battery and your meter or some other continuity tester. The coil part can be initially checked for resistance to make sure it’s not burnt out. If thats OK connect your continuity tester to the other 2 terminals and your car battery to the coil terminals. If the relay contacts are burnt they may still register a good short circuit on your ohm meter but this may break down under load. This is why I mentioned an alternative continuity tester, something requiring more current, such as a bulb. Obviously a selection of crocodile clip leads is handy for such tests.

    Re: Indesit wg1130t belt

The two black wires with spade terminals go to the white thermostat (either way round), the green & yellow wire goes to a male spade which forms part of the bracket for the motor multi pin socket. As Chris says, if the capillary tube is broken on the variable thermostat you will need a new complete stat.

    Re: Indesit wg1130t belt

The green & yellow wires go to the motor casing, the heater element metalwork and the bearing housing. The bearing housing one often goes to a long tin strip that runs from the centre to the bottom edge of the tub.

If you can post a photo of the damage I might be able to advise. I had one of those machines apart the other week so should still have a sketch of the thermostat wiring. Obviously you will need to refit the thermostat that’s come out of the tub.

If you are wanting a good quality machine you could also consider the German made AEG models.
