Re: Windows 7, Who’s taken the plunge??.

Would it be possible to get a Mac and run it alongside the PC, gradually transferring software to the Mac over a couple of years? I don’t do that much for the business on the PC apart from Internet, email and the odd letter so I manage with a very slow desktop running XP Pro. My laptop runs Vista and I’ve had very little bother with it, apart from the hassle of getting it to talk to the router. I could only get vista software for the router online but couldn’t go online without the router :rolls: I had to download software on the desktop, burn it to CD and put that in the laptop.

If customers ask me about Whirlpool washing machines I advise them against buying one. I don’t think they are generally bad machines but the spares are so expensive that they are often not worth repairing.

I’m still confused 😕 TDS shows 2 service manuals under this model, one for machines with the VS81 timer, one for RIM models, made in Spain

    The VS81 manual says:

    30 deg C 17300 ohm
    60 deg C 5460 ohm
    78 deg C 2970 ohm

    The RIM manual says:

    20 deg C 6050 ohm
    60 deg C 1250 ohm
    80 deg C 640 ohm

The machine is the sort without the split cabinet but says Made in EU on it. Does this suggest it’s a Spanish made machine?

Main thing is to avoid anything with solid tyres. I keep the pressures quite low so the tyres can cushion the impact when dropping down small curbs.

Sounds like loose tacho magnet or open circuit tacho coil.

Thanks Steve. I had been trying BENDIX as that’s what the machine says on it but I just tried under Tricity Bendix and found it 😕

I have often thought about re using the spider, especially if the bearings havent broken and there are no visable signs of wear where the seal rests. Have always replaced the spider, seems too big a job not to!

The seal does not run on the spider so damage on the shaft surface will not rip up the new seal. Part of the seal turns with the shaft, the other part stays still with the tub.

    Re: no work

My problem lately is trying to build up spares orders big enough to get free delivery. Homespares used to do free delivery on internet orders over £50 but it seems they must have raised the threshold. I searched the website carefully but can’t find any mention of this. I actually only needed a Zanussi interlock this week but did a bit of re-stocking, carbons, bearings etc to get the order over £50. I went to the checkout page and it was still adding delivery charge of £5.95. I went back and altered quantities to increase the order to over £75 but the delivery charge still came up when I went to checkout, so I reduced the order back to £50+. This means I make £5.95 (+VAT) less profit on the interlock. 🙁

I’ve sometimes used Zanussi ones. No, I don’t think you can buy the 30mm spider but they are usually OK for re-use. The 30mm Bearings with seal are Part No. 1604600. You can also get Part No. 1604770 which is the 35mm spider, bearings and screws.

On your model you normally replace the whole motor end frame, Part Number 096809 so it’s not the simplest or cheapest of brush change jobs. Alternatively, they do sell carbons with bare leads that can be soldered in to the old end frame. If there is a local shop that sells washing machine spares you could take the motor in and ask them to do it.

Re: AEG LAV6050DIG – CARBON BRUSHES

I had a problem like that a few weeks ago with a Zanussi which had an FHP motor. The carbons were removable from the metal holders like on some Hotpoint FHP motors but my loose carbons would not quite fit. I think what I did in the end was reverse the angle of a pair of Hotpoint brushes and fit the new metal holders in the old plastic cases. I think motors badged AEG and FHP come from the same factory.

New Bosch motors are expensive but if there is a shop in your area that sells reconditioned washing machines they might be able to sell you a secondhand motor.

Those brushes are worn out so you need to try it with new ones before you can tell if the motor has failed. You can scrape carbon dust out of the gaps between the copper strips using a sewing needle or thin jewelers screwdriver.

Re: buying new oven – please advise!

There is really not much to choose between the different makes with regard to reliability. Go for something with ordinary rotary controls rather than digital control, which can be expensive to repair. Spares availability is best with the more popular brands such as Zanussi, Electrolux, Hotpoint, Creda and Whirlpool. If you do a lot of grilling a double oven would be best if you have the space. There is one oven I’ve been to a couple of times which is so basic that there’s no indicator neon to tell when the oven has reached temperature. Make sure yours does have such a light or you will be guessing what temperature you have.
