Remove the motor and check the brushes. Also look carefully at the insulation in which the copper strips of the commutator are embedded. Sometimes this insulation material cracks and the crack fills with carbon dust. In such cases the only solution is a replacement motor. Also look at the wiring harness to the motor. There may be a chafed wire touching something metal.

The heater could still cause the RCD to trip even when not turned on. It would only need it’s neutral terminal to be connected as the RCD can detect earth leakage to neutral. Sometimes you get a hole in the heater and it shorts to earth as soon as the water reaches the level of the hole.

The two most common components that cause the RCD to trip when faulty are the motor and the heater element. To check these you can disconnect them (one component at a time) and see it it still trips. With the heater, make sure you take off both wires, in the case of the motor there is a multi pin plug.

    Re: Worst Week Ever

Sunny? Wet & windy here 🙁 Happened to look at the temperature display in the van at about 11.00 this morning, 11 degrees. A week ago at the same time it was 27 degrees but I was too busy to enjoy it. This week there’s no work but the weather has turned horrible 😥

    Re: Cheap Flights

Thanks gents, I did try Travelbag and managed to sort out flights with Royal Brunei Airline for under £500 8) the original plan was to go around February time but that is the dearest part of the season so I’m now going from the end of October to the beginning of December this year. This should equate to their spring so I’m hoping the weather will be OK. I was originally going for 3 weeks but as I’ve saved money on the flights I can afford to stay a bit longer

Re: How to seperate sealled Drum

I would not attempt it as it could go horribly wrong if, for example, the thing fell apart the first time they tried a high temperature wash. I did break up a Hotpoint tub to see what was inside. The bearings were 6205 and 6206 but the seal was different to that from the 30mm bearing kit and ran on a conventional bronze collar. If that collar was damaged you could not buy a replacement spider in any case.

I’ve used the Zanussi ones on Hotpoints. They are the correct shape to fit the dished holes in the drum.

If it has not been used for a while, damp can creep into the elements, causing a slight earth leakage, sufficient to trip an RCD. Is it the main RCD that trips or the individual circuit breaker that serves the cooker? If it is caused by damp you may be able to cure it by heating the elements with a hot air gun. I have a few holiday cottages on my books and they tend to suffer from such dampness problems in the cooker elements as they are usually only let between April and October

What difference does the tumble dryer make to the cost of the washing machine repair? 😕

Re: Hotpoint WT540 Drain Pump Problem

When you mention “voltage at the pump” do you mean that you have checked for this? When in operation there should be 240 volts going to the pump but you need to be aware that, on modern machines the pump is not operated continuously during the spin but is sometimes shut off to save electricity. To be sure it’s not working you therefore sometimes need to observe the operation of the machine for several minutes. Obviously if you do take voltage measurements you need to be mindful of the dangers to yourself and others.

Are you sure all the wires for the heater, motor etc were put back right when you put the tub back in? In particular, some of the newer machines have a wire to the motor casing which is a different colour to the usual green & yellow earth wire. Obviously you also need to check all other connections that might have got tugged during the job.

I’m not familiar with your model but the pressure vessel can usually be removed for cleaning. Can you not simply trace the hose from the switch to it’s other end?

    Re: Whirlpool double oven AKZ161/1X

Interesting. I looked up that part on another site and it comes up as obsolete. If unsure about how to do the job you could do a trial run by removing and re-fitting the existing one. The main thing with these jobs is to make a sketch of where any wiring goes before you disconnect anything. Often multi pin plugs will only go on the correct way but this is not always the case.
