I would estimate that bearing / spider jobs account for about 30{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of my turnover for washing machine work. This is because I charge more labour for these jobs than I would for brushes, pumps etc. No, I didn’t mention UKW in my initial contact mail to Watchdog but I would tell them about the discussions here if they ask for further information.

My guess would be that the tight wires caused the dryer heater to be damaged or work loose and the engineer failed to spot this secondary damage.

No, the repair man did not do the job properly so you should not pay again. I would suggest you tell Hotpoint call centre staff that it’s the same symptoms as before then when someone comes to do the job you can tell them what’s happening now. They usually put a label in the inside of the lid saying what work was done so there should be evidence that this part was previously serviced.

Sorry, I didn’t keep a copy but I was suggesting they do an investigation into washing machines from the main manufacturers, Hotpoint, Zanussi, Hoover etc. I said that machines were being made with sealed outer drums which could not be dismantled for servicing and a sock caught behind the inner drum can now render the machine beyond economic repair. I went on to say that these drums are constructed with poor quality parts and this is dramatically reducing the life expectency for washing machines.

Well, I’ve just contacted Watchdog via their website:

I needed one of these a few weeks ago. I got it from Connect as the customer was willing to pay the inflated price but it would have been cheaper direct from Oreck UK, Tel. 0800 684684. My customer had tried to order one from them himself but they will only sell it to a qualified electrician :rolls:

Thanks for the quick reply, Andy. I will get it from Connect where it is less than half the Masterpart price :tright:

Are the 6205 / 6204 bearings used for all spin speeds? I assumed Hotpoint had increased bearing sizes on the WMA to cope with the heavier wash load and higher spin speeds.

Re: Hotpoint WF Series 30mm Seal

I did try to get a suitable seal in Elgin today. I have another of these machines to do and I don’t have a spare 30mm shaft bearing kit. This time the front bearing came out intact so I think the centre section of the old seal assembly could be re-used. The outer part could well be an off-the-shelf seal as suggested by Martin. Unfortunately I’m told there is nowhere in Elgin so my nearest bearing stockist is Aberdeen, 60 miles away.

    Re: wma

I thought you could buy the seal on it’s own as Connect sell part No. MER026307 “Seal For Drum Shaft 30mm” but what they sent me is not the seal that comes in a 30mm shaft bearing kit.
I have used Zanussi spider bolts on a WMA spider as there is enough clearance for the hex heads.

    Re: Hotpoint Washing Machine

If you visit your local library they will probably have a copy of the Haynes washing machine manual. This gives a detailed description of bearing renewal for these machines. The only unusual tool you need for the drum spider renewal is a 30mm socket for the drum pulley locknut. You will find it easier to change the heater after removing the tub front as you can then get at both sides of its rubber seal.

You could also check the motor TOC and its insulation. It can be handy to keep a few old motors around for when you need a field coil, TOC or tacho bits.

Re: One piece welded tub seized solid!

Yes, if these sealed tubs are so much cheaper to manufacture why can’t they pass on some of the savings to us in the price of a replacement assembly. If I could offer a cost effective tub renewal service it would be nicer work than messing about with bits of old broken bearing.

    Re: Hotpoint Washing Machine

I tend to advise people to hang onto these small drum Hotpoints for as long as possible because they have advantages over many current machines. They are easier to work on and spare parts are cheaper so repair costs are reasonable. If my diagnosis is correct you will need drum support spider C00197587 and heater 1602026. You could get prices for these and see what you think. The job would take about an hour to do.
