No, the new board worked in a Hotpoint WF240P with the EEPROM you supplied.

ParticipantRe: Why do they do that?
Can’t say I’d noticed Phillips and posidrive on the same appliance. My default screwdriver is posidrive as that seems to be right for Hotpoint/Creda. I tend to use the Phillips on microwaves though as they are mostly Japanese or at least non European. Full marks for Whirlpool though as they have screws that can be undone with a 7mm socket or a torx driver.

Yes, I also use silicone, seems to work.

Some people on here frown upon live testing but I would be checking for 240v on the dryer timer motor connections when on a dryer position. It could be a problem with the wash timer. I did one machine the other week where I thought the dryer was faulty but it turned out you have to have the half load button in before it works 😕

ParticipantRe: Problems with returns to Connect anyone?
I don’t return much stuff, perhaps 3 or 4 lots a year but I’ve never had a problem either with getting them collected or receiving a credit note. I find they ignore emails so you do have to ring but they give me a returns number straight away over the phone. On the other hand, I’ve only seen the rep about twice in several years of purchasing from Connect.

Have a look at the underside of the machine. You sometimes get cracks in the base panel where the suspension units bolt on. You also can get one of the suspension units break off where the rod meets the drum. You can check this by looking and feeling to see they are secure. These rods are not easy to replace as there is very limited access to the retaining nut and you also need to grip the rod itself to stop it turning. Other items to check are the concrete blocks (see if they are loose) and the drum bearings/spider. Unfortunately, the only satisfactory way to check for a cracked drum spider is to remove the inner drum

ParticipantRe: How easy we engineers have it now!
I can’t comment on how things were 30 years ago. I was repairing twintubs in 1976 but not for a living. In the 8 years I’ve been doing this work some things have made the job easier, others have made it harder. One of the things I find absorbs a lot of my time is watching computerised machines to observe symptoms. In the extreme, I once stood over a Zanussi for over an hour, waiting for it to leak, which it obligingly managed 4 minutes before the end of programme. If it had been an old fashioned model with a mechanical timer I could have just clicked it round manually until it came to the leaking stage.
The Internet is the main thing to make life easier. I used to make lots of expensive phone calls to find out part numbers, order goods etc. Then when they were ordered there were usually one or 2 parts wrong as the person at the other end of the phone wrote down the numbers wrong.
Fortunately we don’t have heavy traffic, conjestion charges, parking meters or speed cameras up here, athough there are plenty of roving speed traps about.Phidom

Ah, just been reading up:

Quote:
“Since an electrolytic capacitor is polarity sensitive, its use is ordinarily restricted to a dc circuit or to a circuit where a small ac voltage is superimposed on a dc voltage. Special electrolytic capacitors are available for certain ac applications, such as a motor starting capacitor. Dry electrolytic capacitors vary in size from about 4 …..”Clear as mud 😀

😕 Strange, just looked at the RS site. They call it a motor starter capacitor but they also call it an electrolytic. I thought electrolytic capacitors were only suitable for DC circuits.

Thanks for the replies. Found one on http://www.electricspares.com for £36 inc. postage but customer thinks this too dear so I won’t be doing this one.

Tacho magnet or coil. I’ve found the “magnet” (which appears to be non magnetic) sometimes breaks in half.

Could be a faulty top oven switch if it uses the same top element as the grill.

ParticipantRe: indesit 🙁
IMHO they are not worth sorting to sell as recon. machines. I was using a W103UK for a while until the bearings went. I didn’t bother trying to repair it as I just don’t have enough confidence in these modern Merloni machines to sell them with a guarantee. You get leaky tub joints, suspension units ripped out of the base, dodgy modules etc etc.
