Re: Do company’s really take on newbies

    Hi Shaun,

about 12 years ago when first starting out i had same problem as yourself went to college doing city and guilds but provided little practical experience so was left completely stuck, firstly i started to strip down old appliances and put them back together(still cant!) and luck had it found a charity called create in Liverpool that was taking on long term unemployed people and training them in refurbishing domestic appliances! i was working at the time for myself in a completely different field so saved money up to have about 2months out of work and went to create every day for few months from Manchester, they were good enough to let me come down on voluntary bases

after that next point of call were merloni i think i oversold myself at the interview with telling them i could fix their products but they quickly discovered i couldent but they dident care anyway and sent me out with 10jobs a day

also seems like your financially investing in your future with paying for Dixon’s training and everything why not try local appliance shops see if you can hang out with an engineer unpaid for a while to be honest myself id be glad of the company as it can sometimes be a lonely road 8hours or so aday.

    good luck

    Re: EMW issues

just thought id post my experiences with EMW, its been A1 and cannot be faulted except for a couple of years back i had some issues with indesit boards, the usual flashing and clicking round balava in the end i gave entertaining board problems as only time i got any recalls from any boards supplyied by them was indesit, so after that its been plain sailing again. i think its a good resource to have to be honest, im not plugging EMW as iv had issues like i say but in all i dont think from my experiences they should be knocked.

    Re: Whirlpool instructions for use?

Thanks don went back to site went to contact us filled in big form for manual request and says my postcode is invalid, spent 30 mins trying different things and gave up 😥

have sold this machine and customer on the blower night and day wanting the manual complaining the programs are taking to long to finish,

has provided me with a complete list of every program and times.

    program 12.quickwash =40 mins
    program 4. =2hrs 15 min
    program 7.= 1hrs 45 mins
    program 2.= 2 hrs 15mins
    program 3.= 2hrs 35min
    cold fill only machine.

this was brand new machine that had slight fault with dial that got fixed up and sold for bobbins without manuf warranty. only last week.
was tested before it went out all seemed ok completed ok???

any ideas? quickwash seems ok, what about rest?

sorry what i meant to say was searching for the washing machine manual and the site gives the manual for wine chiller instead using the awg model number.

Re: Lifting up washing machines to rear of van?

just to chip in on this one, read this with interest as iv had bad groin and back problems for about 4 years running, off work for 1st year and their after struggling with job, give up lifting washing machines have i have someone who does all the lifting now, calls to every job and deals with all heavy lifting ie, built in machines he’s not far off becoming an engineer now himself 😆 after watching each repair, point being iv learnt the hard way that the weight of washing machines especially some washer dryers is a real hazard. reminds me of a post i read from a member cant remember who but was unlucky enough to get a full body infection from not wearing knee pads. if i could put my injury down to a specific part id say doing drum changes by myself?

Thanks for speedy reply martin, funny you should say that, checked pump no blockages even though couldent get the thing to start, but the pump was red hot? customer says machine wasent left on prior to inspection? no water in machine either? so ill go back and take another look, the program locks in fine just wont start, so this machine is relaying the pump and its dead then? id normally expact the machine to still start, anyway im confused but will try changing the pump

    thanks again simon

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

on a bad week i can see 2 or a good week maybe 6? so maybe average is 3-4 a week? i work from the back of my house but very respectful to my neighbours (its a noisy place anyway) i have a lock up garage close by to home for storage that costs about £50 a month, i dont have a van i use my mondeo hatch that we call the tardis as i can put 2 machines in back with plenty of room left.

iv been their with shop life got the t-shirt iv settled for no overheads at all, or very little, i dont pay any advertising at all now, if just found by trial and error this works, no stress and most of takings are profit,my moral and motivation also has increased with it knowing that when a bad spell comes i wont end up in the nut house biting my fingernails to the bone.

yes your right its highly populated close by to city centre as well, i tell you what is a pain in the butt is working in the evening especially in the city centre appartments i suppose you cant have it always,

i ended up going down this route by chance after 2 years out due to illness just working a few hours a day at first when i eased myself back into it.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

iv started recons as to spread my wings somewhat as repairs went a gear down in sales figures, been knocking out about 5 recons a week, just to customers who’s machines are BER, customer perception here, i found that the usual joe bloggs is happy to pay say £125 or £150 for recon if a good one is available, zanussi if i can get them or hotpoint wm’s ie 52’s or 62’s i clean them up until their sparkling and look like new selling each one with a user manual and warranty certificate and wrap them up in cling wrap!, each one with a years warranty(brave i know 😯 ) until now iv only had the odd callout!!! to be honest im quiet amazed at how little service calls iv done to the machines but after saying that i give each one a good once over, iv started putting certain new parts on wm’s ie red interlock, gen hotpoint brushes, and new bearings, and then selling for a good price each time. anyone struggling to make ends meat id recommend this route as its certainly topped up my end of week wage to the point of quiet reasonable,i have one supplier for the machines a local scrap man, hes out hunting for hotpoint wm’s as we speak 😆

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

called to a old lady few months back, bust be knocking on, nice old dear her top loading washing machine had give up the goose. i did not charge her for callout or estimate at all. why? simple reason is you know whats coming next, in fact you could put money on the phone will go and a relative will be kicking off,

she asked me to supply her with a new top loader which i did, i had it on sale for £175.00 as its a belter so what did i do? supply and installed for £100!! why? well i was just being the good Samaritan that i am, an old lady living on here own?

i then spent at least 40 min demonstrating how to use it, and putting labels on the machine so she wouldn’t forget.

all goes well about 4 weeks later she books a service call (give 1 years warrantly will all recon appliances) as said softener wasent being taken went round checked out ever time on rinse it takes the softener, turns out some of the colour was left at the bottom of the compartment and looked to her like it had no been taken,

next call its sticking, next knobs dont work,
each time insists on having a brew and a chat if you get the picture.
well to be honest each time i went was on my way back home and its obvious what she was up too.sat and talked about the war each time!!

anyway each time very considerate and polite as being a vulnerable old lady in my own community.

only last week her daughter on the phone to report the machine was sticking again, she insisted that their were a fault with it, although she had personally never used it. so to settle this once and for all i took the machine this time back to my workshop for a complete functional test

tested the machine its working spot on perfect, a1 no problems what so ever.

phones her back to arrange re-delivery and she bought a new machine! thats within 1 day! her daughter gets on the phone and is slating me down and becoming abusive demanding a refund and being called a con man who robs old lady’s!

what the hell do i do? iv spent countless hours with this customer now insisting on a refund, the product that i sold her was a1. its not as if there were any problems at all, the old dear is struggling to get around so probably cant use it very well.

iv took the trouble to day to send her a letter explaining everything inc. a print out of test results of safety test and additional functional test i did extensively covering all the functions of the machine.

    you just no pleasing people?
