Thanks Dave and Dales-Electronics for your advice. I thought I had solved the problem earlier.

Isolated power, took back off f/freezer (at base) – lot of accumulated thick balls of dust (hoovered out) and in between the black grill ‘fins’. So both front and back of the black grill now thoroughly vacummed.

Lightly tapped on the compressor with handle of the phillips screwdriver. Within 5 minutes the black grill was getting quite hot to the touch; the compressor was very hot (and humming sound from within) – but the base fan is still not working.

I watched the temperature on the freezer drop from -5 to -13 within 15 minutes or so. The fridge temperature dropped from +15 to +6 in same time frame. Then I went to watch Cheltenham Town FC get beaten by Swansea 2-1! Got back and noticed that the temps were now -9 and +12 respectively, the black grill was now barely warm.

By the way, when I took the back base cover off of the freezer I noticed that the ‘spindle’ or ‘metal pin’ that adjoins the fan to the fan motor seems extended. Are they supposed to be sticking out about 2cm??

So, like I said I thought I had cracked it but maybe not. Is the black grill meant to be hot constantly or not? Also, just to mention it but when the freezer dropped to -12 or thereabouts the temperature warning icon stopped flashing. But it is back on again now!

I may need to go there, but is it something I can atke apart and do myself?

Also there’s a white coin turn thing on the door below the lock. It looks like a childproof selector, but it either stays in permamnently or when sticking out, it is sprung loaded and goes in whe the door is closed. What is this?

Thanks for your advice. The dishwasher is definately heating up and is permanently running a wash programme although none of the programme buttons are set! Have tried turning power off then on again in the hope of re-setting the electric programme but it instantly starts washing once the power is turned back on again! Currently it is unplugged but full of water so it seems its not draining as well.

Please can you recommend an engineer? We live near Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Again, thanks for replying.

The seals for these lids are moulded to the lid so it would mean a complete lid ass which would come costly.

Bearing in mind where the appliance is situated the appliance could run quite happily for a long while yet,you just need to knock off the excess ice every few weeks.

Any moisture that may go onto the floor will dry up naturally.

I have know the famous hotpoibt fridge freezers with insulation breakdown going on for 6-8 yrs after they have statred to show ice on the underneath outside of the unit,So in my opinion there wouldnt be any mad rush to replace this unit.

Its engineer time, It may have several problems brought on by a single pproblem.

Assuming after 150 minutes theres no heat, thats a good start and if its an electronic programme it may need re-setting once the fault is cured.

I have to replace the drive belt on mine, but from removing the top, it looks like the drum might fall out or need to be supported somehow.

If he’s done it, can you please tell me what is involved with removing the rear panel ?

Admin/Mods – Sirs or Ma’ams, any idea what the part number for the belt is ? 🙂

I’ll also add that the casing of the motor seems to be quite hot, would this be due to the motor working overtime as the freezer is not freezing?

Me thinks not – have read manual from cover to cover looking for a reset option.

Looks like buttons/knob are dubious – now got rid of the auto label but cannot set the time.

So – the good news is that we will beable to cook dinner – the bad news is that maybe the timer module needs replacing ( or we don’t use it!)
