For the Oven, you need a new fan element I suspect

Wouldn’t be too sure of that… I could be one of many things including the likes of earth faults

Make sure the heater is fully inserted, likewise with the sensor, then tighten the nut in the center… not too tight, but tight enough to cause a seal.
It may be wise if the heater has displaced itself to ensure that there was no internal cause, ie a sock or similar engaged in the heater loops…

Check the drum for movement. The noise, the water, and the smoke, could indicate bearing or drum-support failure

ParticipantRe: Surge protection?
Washing machines already use line smoothing capacitors on the cable so I would not assume there is a need for such an object… your best bet is to ask an electrician.
Having said that; even if you use one of these devices, your washing machine is still at risk to surges from any of the electrical components within should any of them go faulty… your surge protector will offer you no benefit in that situation

Martin wrote:A thermostat either works or it doesn’t. A thermostat wouldn’t cause the RCD to trip either. And chances are on the defrost (fan only) it wouldn’t necessarily trip the RCD. In fact if it doesn’t you can be sure that it is purely an element at fault.
Look at the first statement that the op has made “All of a sudden turning the large oven on (even just the grill, just the bottom element or even just the fan) trips the electrics.” The fan doesn’t come on with the bottom element or the grill. The only things common to all three are Thermostat (if it is the earthed type, and it is happening on all selections), Selector switch, or wiring problem.
As for the thermostat not tripping an RCD, only did one on weds with that fault… It depends if the thermostat has an earth tag.
The selector selects the spoken elements individually… Since it doesn’t matter which setting is selected and the RCD trips on any of 3 settings using individual elements then I do not presume that it is going to be one of your elements

Jim,
Just checking elements with a multi-meter will not be suffice, you will need to use an insulation tester.
What you have stated leads me to beleive that the culprit is other than the element/s that you suspect. Firstly I would be looking toward the oven thermostat and then toward the selector switch.
For reasons of eticate and safety we are unable to instruct you on how to do this and to advise you to click here to Find An Engineer
