Re: Has anyone heard of The Appliance Academy

Personally I think a basic electrical course would benefit a lot of engineers more than anything.
Knowing the relationships between Live, neutral and earth and how to detect and test between them is a fundamental part of this job.

The times I’ve seen ‘engineers’ in the local distributors asking which way the wires connect on capacitors and similar never fails to amaze me.

Edit. Just realised it may look as though I’m casting aspersions…I’m not ofc. I’m just saying that if you haven’t already got a good grounding of electricals, then that would be beneficial 🙂

    Re: Loose wires on cookers.

Yes Jim, that’s exactly what I’m saying (and Dave as well I think).

I’ve gone to a couple of cookers where internal wires have come adrift due to poor assembly and was worried that they might be misconstrued when seen on the jobsheet.

These are definitely NOT chargeable jobs, they are faulty cookers where the wires were not tightened correctly at the factory.

    Phew!!

Thanks Dave, me too regarding the email.
Well that makes me feel a little bit better 🙂

Just have to see what happens.

Biggest problem with the layout is that it all seems to just ‘blend’ in with itself. There’s no definite lines of seperation so that you can see where the ‘stickies’ end and the new threads begin. Same for forum sections.
Other thing that annoy is the fact that the posters name/details appears on the right now, that’s just counter intuitive, as practically 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of forums out there put that stuff on the left (as did the old one).
It just doesn’t seem to flow 🙁
Take http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums these are probably one of the most popular forums sites in the country if not Europe. They are easy on the eye, nicely laid out, have clear lines of seperation and a nice uniformity that just simply works.

Hopefully with a little tweaking Ken can get these a bit clearer to use.

It was a bright spot in an otherwise dull show.

It took an ‘old school’ comedian to show them how it’s done.

Would love a (more) direct source for these machines.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

Had a call diverted to my mobile the other day, I was driving (handsfree) so I asked the guy to text me his address and postcode as I couldn’t write it down and I would get to him the following day.
Later that night I finally got a text with just his postcode on it. So I texted him back asking for his house number and street name.
Sure enough a few moments later back came a number and a street.

Next day was one mad day and I went to the address only to find two young ladies who weren’t in need of any of my services 🙁
So I just skipped the call and finished the day.

He rang me up a few hours later asking why I didn’t call. When I explained about the wrong address he said:
‘oh, well our address is very difficult to find, so I gave that address as it’s easier’ 😕

Did you remove the brushes and have a look?

I had one last week where there was excessive arcing and the brushes were badly burned along one edge. I tried cleaning them and the com and then refitting them. But there was still more arcing than there should have been.

I fitted a new motor in the end, and it was immediatley much better both visibly and on noise level.

They should never be allowed to sell a machine such as that in this country.

I hope you get better soon, and able to work.

I can echo the busiest weeks part… but unfortunately I’ve made promises to work tomorrow. I did plan for a quiet day, but it’s up to 9 jobs already 🙁

With the collective knowledge on this site, is there any real excuse for a less than competent engineer/repairer?

    K.

Knowledge doesn’t endow competence. You can can have all the information in the world at your fingertips, but if you don’t have the ability to use it properly then it’s useless, possibly dangerous.

I’m not very vocal on these forums, but I would like to add my thanks and best wishes to all those that not only run this site, but also contribute in the way of advice.

Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

” If you think i’m going to pay you a bull**** call out charge to fix this there is no way”

My reply would have been “If you think I’m ever going to come to your house for any reason, think again!” at which point I would put the phone down.

Life’s too short to have to put up with these sort of idiots.
