ParticipantRe: crosslee whitenight may have a problem 🙁
I had a condenser dryer flare up a few years ago in a pub where they were washing chef’s whites and kitchen wipes.
The drying load went up in flames as the door was being opened and had they not closed the door immediately it would have been toast.
There was nothing wrong with the dryer and it survived.
Because the drying air is recirculated residues of cooking fats in the drying load are not removed and can become flamable if the door is opened at the wrong time.

Edit. The facia has melted down the front of the machine but the door is relatively undamaged so must have been open when the fire staarted.

ParticipantRe: removing statesman xt5-1020 pulleys
Statesman told me a year ago that they don’t do bearing work under warranty so it may be worth a phone call before you break any more tools.

Ask them to take the lid off!
I mean most car salesmen are only too keen to lift the bonnet on your average dream car aren’t they. 😀

ParticipantRe: BT Fair Usage Policy
I have unlimited calls to landlines on my Orange mobile and the fair usage limit is 3000 minutes per month which for me is impossible to exceed and I only use the land line for 0845 & 0800 and the like which are charged.

ParticipantRe: Oven Thermostat Testing
You didn’t say how the temp was being measured.
If its just the customers say so and they are using one of those rotary dial thermometers I would check the temp with a digital meter.
Is the door closing tight?
Seals ok?
Does the cooker have a cooling fan and is it working?
Has the element been replaced in the past with a lower wattage part that can’t get the oven hot enough?

Dog kennels rings a bell.
I took two buckets full of dog hair out of one of these recently.
Not spinning was the complaint and it was solid with matted hair.
Drum out and clean then home for shower and change. 👿
Clutch will also be worn out BTW.

ParticipantRe: CI 555 Stops for a rest
It was the motor overheating and cutting out.
Not being able to do a reset had me thinking there was more to it than that but the fault was easy to prove and new motor is on its way

I got a leaflet from my bank to inform me that the scheme will end on June 30th 2011.Steve, I hate to tell you this but cheque guarantee cards went AWOL way back in October 2009. And many banks since that time have refused to honour even the established £75 ceiling. So golden rule since has always been…IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE IT THEN DONT USE IT…..!!! 😉
September 2009 was when they announced that the scheme was to end on June 30th 2011.
At least if a customer produces a guarantee card with £100 limit on it then they have some standing with their bank and you can compare the signatures.
As I said I have had very few problems as I do check cards and cheques carefully.
Anyway I wont be taking many cheques after June 30th which is why I posted the question about card payment systems.
Cash is of course always acceptable and without a guarantee card scheme I can insist on cash payment without sounding a bit dodgy. 😉

All parts delivered to your own garage, all paperwork done at home and mailed to the local office once a week, all stock control done by the individual engineer, all monies banked up every Friday without fail, all technical information delivered by post.
All in all a very good grounding for a sole trader. 😀
We had a ‘team’ meeting once a month at a local pub, first drink and sarnies paid for. 8)
We did still have a great group mentality in those days though, due in no small part to the local area managers. Most of them had been field engineers not bean counters, always had a good Christmas bash etc.
The wheels started to come off in the very late 70’s which was about the time I jumped ship.
Hard times ATM all round, but there will always be work for good engineers, one way or another. 😉
Jim.
Ditto all of that!
We must have led parallel lives Jim but with different companies but in my case it was a mere 25 years ago.
Same story, different faces but a good grounding for self employment all the same.
As you say there is no shortage of work for good engineers but I have increasingly been wearing my salesman’s hat as repairs become uneconomic and I have become more of a built in appliance supplier/installer than a repairer.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AKZ161/AV
These ovens heat up in stages and it is normal for the heater relay to click in and out especially when the selected temp is within about 20 degs.
If you want say 200 C quickly then set a higher temp and turn down when reached.Has the customer wrapped the shelf in foil to keep it clean cos that would affect temp?
NTC is worth a try but looks like PCB may be the problem.
Expensive 👿
BTW AFAIK the NTC on this is a PTC if you are testing it.
