cant do any harm
yes normally the freezer keeps going if there was a blockage but its normal practice to do a defrost on these to eliminate ice before you do anything on FF of this type
what worries me is the 10 sec burst from the compressor. sounds like the compressor overload was cutting out but the overload would be doing its job so changing is wont necessarily cure it

probably the timer
older machine use a reversing contact driven by the motor on the back of the timer.
when it gets to spin these contacts are not used so machine will turn clockwiseDave
timer may be still available

no you said the fridge was working and since the fridge gets its cold from the freezer it was a possibility that ice may have been stopping the air flow. if the freezer is the same temp as the fridge then its possible to be a sensor or board fault. I am assuming the compressor is ok as you said the fridge was working and i am assuming in this weather with a compressor fault it would be a lot warmer
how long does the compressor run for ?

this type of freezer relies on cold air circulating with a fan. if the unit is iced up it can restrict the freezing process.
my first try is a complete defrost before you condemn anything elseswitch off, open freezer door for 2 days, then try again

if its clean with no scale build up on the glass and still leaks then the seal needs changing

1 with this type of pressure switch you can destroy it by blowing into it
2 it could be the main board that has the fault. the board uses Triacs to control the components and they sometimes fail as can other chips on the board
