They’re not all going to go wrong like that though? He’d surely bring a class action against Merloni if they did!

Are holes same size both ends of damper? I’ve seen some mounted one way up and others mounted the other way. Not on same machine of course.

Hi Big Chris. I don’t think this one would have been the element. The motor might be a possibility as it had just had it’s first new brushes and there was plenty of carbon dust around. Having read through a good many E34 threads earlier this evening I should have looked for dry joints round the relays, colourcatchers in the sump (but I think I covered that by disconnecting the p/sw hoses 😉 ) and the electronic p/sw has often been implicated. So I’m really looking forward to when I get another E34.

    Re: parking in the city

I think it’s a damn good idea. I can hide my bike round the corner and add on a fiver for the ticket. I quite often arrive in a bit of a sweat anyway so I’ll just tell them it was a long walk. 😆
This is no city where I am but I always get people telling me when they book where I can “park my van”, especially in the fishing villages.

    Thankyou Martin. 😀
I won’t be celebrating till it’s had about a fortnight though, based on previous experience.
Gotta go now. There’s some bloke at the door with what sounds like a Nottingham accent shouting merry murder 😆 .

Thanks Seamy. I did that on previous visit. I’m well aware of the problems they cause. Heater was not being activated (warming up) during first five seconds of start up though and was meggering in the hundreds of Mohms cold. Also this is a soft water area = I’ve only had to change a dozen wash elements in the last ten years. (And maybe two pressure switches. One being just the other day.)
I’ve since done a search on E34 and it seems it’s a “contentious” fault. I’ll be better prepared next time.
The thing’s effectively on its way to the scrapyard as of now anyway. I’m musing about whether it’s worth me renting a workshop so I could abduct these difficult ones but on the whole, I think not.
I might get myself a Blackberry though. The guy was showing me his after I got him to take a photo of the carbon deposit and it would be useful for accessing this site while on the move. (Would have to get some stronger specs though )

    Re: ARISTON AWD12 FILLING.

Well, it’s a bit too early to say yet for sure but this story may have a happy ending. Sunday morning I had a very detailed look at the old board. What I found was some easily missed corrosion (green copper compound) on a couple of the triacs, although they all tested OK. There was also some around various links and a diode. So I hoiked out all five of Q7 to Q10 (Z0607’s) and replaced them with the MAC97A8’s I had bought. I also gave the whole board a good scrub with a soft brass brush. On one or two of the extracted triacs there was visibly a bridge of green stuff between the gate and middle legs. Maybe at 240v this would be enough to leak across to the gate and provide a trigger to the triac. I think this has been caused by condensation, rather than a leak as the dryer ducting showed no sign of leakage.
So that board is now back in the machine and survived multiple test / re-set sequences this afternoon. I’ve got the phone’s ringer turned off just in case though 😆 .

    Re: Zan jetsystem 1400 FJR1454W pump 5 secs > St/pse flas

Well I went back. Did the diagnostics and got E34. Manual said that this is incongruity between anal-logic (sp?) and conventional pressure switches.
Cleared last error, disconnected p/sw hoses and tried again. Still no joy.
Decided to whip board out again and have another look.
Well, you may remember, but probably not, that in my earlier post I said how I’d cleared a massive carbon build up off the print side, without troubling to access the component side of the board. This time I opened it up fully and found, to my delight, almost as much of the black stuff on that side. Bingo! I thought and diligently paint brushed it all away and re-installed board.
But to my horror, the fault persisted and no matter how many times I did the diagnostics and cleared last error and fiddled about with loom positions, it would not go away 😡 .
Customer appears on scene at this point and asks about progress. I explain situation and suggest maybe they could hang on just till the end of the week by which time I may well have more info (and time+energy to get back out that way.) But the lady of the small country mansion with huge gardens is looking decidedly :nono: . He says, “Oh well, you did your best. Here, have some more money :D. Do you think Miele is any good?”
So there’s another one ended up on the scrapheap and me thinking, “if only I could have had a bit more time at it.”

That’s really good. As you said, I was almost there with my guess :innocent: . Anyway, it’s a really useful lesson. Next time I come upon a Zanussi E40 next to a ruined wall and two penknives I won’t have to stand around puzzling for long :tright: .

    Re: ARISTON AWD12 FILLING.

Actually, I should look on the bright side, (as I hang here on my cross . )
I can easily afford to just jack this one in, keep £20 for the call out charge, send back the re-con board (after returning to extract it 🙁 that’s the PITA)) and call it a day. What really bugs me is that I’ve been “outwitted” by a washing machine that’s determined to go to the scrapper; and the customer will be one more who will be too embarassed to want to put any poor soul through this sort of hassle again and may become one of that growing band who will never call a repairer again.
(And just in case anyone mentions ISE, yes ISE could answer some of these issues, but in this case the customer will probably just buy another cheapie because they only use the property for a few months a year.)
