    Re: Bosch/Siemens brushes nightmare

Do you always bed the new brushes in with a decent ceramic com stick Micky? Good idea on any motor but these fellas do seem to be particularly sensitive.

TBH i have had no probs with non gen brushes in the short term, but i have had a couple of motors throwing a hissy ( & armature segments!) after a few months have past, not the strongest motors though IMO. :rolls:

For what its worth Martin, i replaced a popped one shot with a microtemp several months ago & have had no call back. Job was a 40 mile round trip away & didnt have a one shot on me.

But i totally agree with the comments about modifications, not something to make a habit of.. anyway, good luck chap. 😉

Cheers chaps, i think she has got too much time on her hands. Anyone else fed up explaining low water levels & epic length progs are to be expected on modern machines :rolls:

Well if that gap continues to close, the 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of indy repairers surviving compared with 20 years ago will probably dwindle by a further 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}.
There will possibly be enough work for 2 or 3 of us in an average town, helping the minority who still prefer to repair, however cheap replacements become.

Yes, business will always continue to change & we either adapt or move on, but as an admirer of quality engineering, the current state of play does make me angry 👿

The problem with appliances costing the same as a round of drinks Martin, is fewer & fewer people will even pick up the phone to enquire about a repair.. its straight to Argos or Tesco for many now.

Anyway, back to you & Ken.. 😀 😉

Well, lets hope a general hike in retail prices does happen, even 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} would make a big difference to the take up rate of repairs IMO.

I know we have the knock on effect on spares to consider but it would on balance be better for our trade i would say.

The price to simply replace an appliance is i’m afraid THE deciding factor for 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of people, most simply couldnt give two hoots about waste, its the cheapest percieved route to having clean clothes, dishes or whatever thats foremost in their minds.

Seeing that Zanussi or whatever at £269 instead of £229 can only help us, no question.

ALWAYS get the garage appliances at this time of year too :rolls: And considering i’m on a latitude similar to Moscow, it aint fun!
The winter of ’95 sticks in my mind, minus 20 or lower for several days, ran out of inlet valves due to replacing ice damaged ones.
The best was a hotpoint which had been left on rinse hold overnight & naturally had frozen solid.. what did the customer do.. tried it in spin of course.. new motor on that one. Twits. 😕

    Re: A philosophical viewpoint

If the manufacturers & sheds continue to chase sales growth & prices remain the same i have a suspicion your prediction will slowly but surely come true harley.
I would be more than happy to continue in this line of work till retirement, because i do, for the most part, enjoy it.

Its just when i look back at my books from 10 years ago i find i was making much the same sort of money as i am now ! Simply because appliances have become on average cheaper to replace and i just cant get my tight fisted fellow scots to part with any more cash as the years roll by!

I have tried increasing prices, but i find you just get more “nah, i’ll just buy a new one” responses on the phone.

Its a hard life innit? :rolls:
