No earth connection is the more likely reason.

Oh ye of little faith. Remember only 20 yrs ago the mobile phone could only make phone calls. Today everyone and his dog’s life couldn’t exist without a 4G phone. Our life ceases when our phone is nicked. Technology today (apparently) centres around our American fridge freezers (yes me too, I never realised). They have got in-built CCTV cameras so you can be stuck in Lidl in Leytonstone and access your fridge to see if you need to buy milk. Or leave a noticeboard message to the little shite you left at home not to touch the cream cakes within. In less than 5 yrs our lives won’t be bearable unless we can turn up the heating, check on the washing machines cycle progress, tell the courier to take the parcel to your neighbours, check that your van is still where you left it and record the complete Champions League matches whilst you’re taking time out in the Maldives.

ParticipantRe: Bosch SGS43A12GB/27 PCB ?
Configuration is not required on this model. The instructions refer to with or with Sicasym and whether you select it as ‘on’or ‘off’ sicasym it will not alter the program. So in effect you can ignore that instruction leaflet.
As for the 35deg taking 2 hours do the other program options work OK?

goodlv wrote:Owen model – esteem si500
Owen? There’s a NewWorld si500? Owen doesn’t Google up any answers.
Low flame could be blocked jet, FSD playing up or the gas tap itself at fault. In any event it is NOT a recommended DIY fix but rather you should contact your local Gas Safe repairer.

Could you describe what exactly you did to fix the pump? Did you turn it on its side, upside down, stick a new pump in?

Except Hotpoint, Bosch, Neff, Siemens, Beko and others I suppose. These full wrap around cabinets are such a pain don’t you think?

Well I’ve flogged this issue to death that’s for sure. I just find the facts about this firm you work for so bloody unbelievable I really do. One thing about this trade is that we never stop learning. You’ve been in the job just four years whereas I’ve notched up over 50 and I’m still learning. Sometimes things I really should be less concerned over especially like in this case when it is beyond my control. But I’d love to have words with your boss, oh yes. I guess he got into this business after an unsuccessful career in communications?
Enough already 😉
Any further questions you have do feel free to fire away as we’d love to help you further. 😀

andykent wrote:But I’m surprised how quickly my replacement brushes wore out – 2/3 years when the originals lasted 15. How would this happen? And would it be sufficient to have blown the main board?
Firstly, yes pattern brushes are inferior to the genuine ones. They are marginally softer, wear down more easily and hence give off far more dust. However, whether you fit pattern or genuine brushes the commutator segments over 15 yrs use wear significantly. Often as not requiring rebedding with a ‘commutator stick’ to remove the groove and make each segment smooth across its entire width.
As for blowing the main board then that is very unlikely as the integral thermal trip would stop that from happening and, in most instances, the house RCD/MCB would trip anyway. That’s not to say the motor wouldn’t but it would be a rare event if it did.

But you said that your ‘firm’ doesn’t do PAT tests any more?
Newbiegoeasy wrote: I definitely wouldn’t be allowed to buy a megger never mind actively use one because “that’s not how we’ve been trained”.
You can’t buy and use your own tools? Unbelievable! Four years, four years you’ve worked for this outfit where ‘the boss’ insists a multimeter is the only tester you need, has scrapped PAT testing and is so awkwardly unapproachable you can’t ask basic questions that should have been taught within the first six months of starting the job.
Newbiegoeasy wrote:This is an awkward situation. I want to do thing’s right and want to keep learning too. But I do not want to leave this job.
I quite agree but I would seriously suggest you look around for another job. Meanwhile take heed of all we have answered from the questions you’ve put to us. Any buy yourself and use an insulation tester.

ParticipantRe: Neff dishwasher internal seal leak.
It is a common failing on these machines. Often the rear corner the most vulnerable and detergent detritus leeches out.
No easy cure I’m afraid and the only solution is to clean the area and apply sealant along the edges, overlapping both sides of the affected area. An epoxy resin sealant the best, most resilient solution.
I have a theory that it only affects those appliances that are not correctly located resulting in a slight twist in the cabinet over time that causes the stainless liner to lift fractionally away from its plastic tub base. Bad installs on uneven floors and lop-sided carcass fitting always results in this problem.
Free standing versions of this type of dishwasher rarely suffer the same problem. (No comfort for you sadly, just an observation on my part)

Perhaps the best cure for these devices is to unplug the Ethernet connector?

Newbiegoeasy wrote:I spoke to my boss and I was told that everything I need is on my multimeter and also that we don’t do PAT testing anymore.
We now know why your “boss” doesn’t answer any of your questions or assist in your continued learning. He simple hasn’t a clue, not one iota.
Newbiegoeasy wrote:There are some circumstances where we would test for reaistance but they are few and far between.
The insulation test is THE most important tool in your toolkit and should be used always, on every job. Unless you test the earth potential of all appliances you repair you will never establish it as being safe for use. All earthed appliances have to be tested in this way. It takes seconds to perform. Your boss didn’t teach you that, I did. Do it as a matter of course, meanwhile ask nothing of him except for more money.

Lawrence wrote:But what if it’s a large appliance ? It would have to be modified in the field which got me thinking –
How many of us would know what do with an IOT appliance? But they are software driven so the software can be corrected/re-written and downloaded to the appliance in the form of a remote Internet update. Meanwhile just disconnect it from the web or ISP cloud until the undate is created. You might also do a factory software reset if necessary.

Coming from the south of god’s own county myself, it is always tragic to learn of a fellow Yorkshireman suffering puds that won’t rise. It just shouldn’t be. I don’t wish to flour over the issue or throw water over the technique but clearly if there was ever a case to blame ones tools then this is surely the time.
As you know, our batter mix should go into a very hot oven. And with the element on its way out that was never gonna happen. But the good news is, you’ve sorted in now (yah!) and your ideal starter to a Sunday Roast is a perfect as ever. A’up lad! 😀
