Sorry to hear about your injury. I’ve given it up as a bad job so I’m not doing any more jobs until either the snow goes or some of the minor roads get ploughed.

With the collective knowledge on this site, is there any real excuse for a less than competent engineer/repairer?
K.
Knowledge doesn’t endow competence. You can can have all the information in the world at your fingertips, but if you don’t have the ability to use it properly then it’s useless, possibly dangerous.
I agree entirely. It’s not just down to knowledge or even IQ. I’ve met people with brilliant minds who are useless at physical tasks. As a kid I had very poor manual dexterity but this improved after I left school. Now I’m getting older and I seem to be getting more clumsy again but that might be mainly down to failing eyesight. Some of the jobs on modern machines are a bit like keyhole surgery. An example is changing the drum paddles on Hoover machines. They are held with one tiny stainless torx screw that you can get at through the sump hose outlet. As the screw is stainless you can’t secure it with a magnetic bit and its over to one edge of the sump outlet so you don’t have good access.

I had to go to the shops anyway so I did venture out but it was not easy. Nearly all the other vehicles I saw were tradesmens vans, most other people had the sense to stay at home 😆 It took me about 10 minutes to do about 200 yards up one hill then it was like a tobbogan run coming away from the job down the same hill. Parking was also a nightmare. It’s so deep now that it’s difficult to even get near the curb on the sideroads. You have to stop, blocking the road and dig enough snow to be able to pull off the middle section of road that’s still in use.

ParticipantRe: You live where?
At one time I kept getting calls from towns around Glasgow, a similar 190 to 200 miles from me. I think they got my number from some kind of search engine which takes a very liberal view of the term “local”. 😆

ParticipantRe: How would you deal with a customer like this??
Yes, there’s no need for a slanging match. I’ve had that sort once or twice. As others have said, it’s best just not to attempt any kind of repair for people with that attitude. I would just say, “Sorry, I can’t help you, I suggest you try someone else.”
I sometimes get customers who say “Don’t make a special trip, just drop in when you’re passing.” I do just that but I still charge them the usual call-out charge. 😉Phidom
ParticipantRe: Bosch T/D WTE84102/GB05
I went to one of these today. It runs for about a minute then goes dead, no lights lit or flashing. I tried bypassing the TOC on the heater but that made no difference. It will sometimes come on again after a minute or two, sometimes longer. There is a small PCB with a relay, mounted on the side at the top of the machine. I assume this must control the heater, as the motor still runs with the 2 thick wires to the board disconnected. With these wires off it still cuts out after about a minute. Any suggestions?

ParticipantRe: DHL DELIVERY
My element from CDA arrived yesterday. Ironically I think it must have already been here when I rang the customer to give an update of the situation. Later I was going outside for something and found a very battered looking box on the doorstep.

ParticipantRe: How to get to the top.
Yes, when he’s going up the caged bit it does not look too bad. Perhaps a lot of jobs do not require them to go right up to the top. They don’t say how much the thing sways about in the wind but it must be quite bad.

Oh great! I rang CDA on Friday to see what’s happened to my oven element (saga described elsewhere). They say they sent it by DHL on 2nd December :bang:

I wish I had concerns as trivial as that to keep me awake. 😆

Ah, sounds like we have got off quite lightly here in darkest Banffshire. I’ve had no bother getting to the few calls I’ve had for the last week or so but I did have a bit of trouble getting away from one today. It was a customer I know quite well who lives down a rough track but not far from the busy A98. There is quite a steep uphill incline where the track meets the A98 and that bit was thick, solid ice. There was a bit of clear road about 20 feet or so before the junction so it was possible to get out if you set off from there and didn’t have to stop to give way at the icy bit. I must have rolled back and started forward from that grippy bit about 20 times before I struck lucky and arrived at the junction when there was a gap in the traffic.

Some websites send you an email to tell you there’s a PM waiting for you but the default setting for this site appears to be not to notify you by email.

Yes, I don’t know why they can’t have an industry standard for simmerstat terminal numbering. Even different ones from the same manufacturer can have the same numbers / letters for completely different connections, Despite having information from this site and other places I have several times had to open them up to work out which terminal is which.
