Does the door lock? If not, the door interlock/switch is the first item to check / replace.

Some of you are still making some money then. I thought it would be a wet weekend in Bognor this year 😆

    Re: Packing…..or not!!!

This recycling is a bit of a joke. If I lived in a town or village I would get 2 wheelie bins and 2 plastic boxes and could get a £1000 fine if I put the wrong stuff in the wrong receptacle. Because I live out in the sticks I still just have the one wheelie bin and everything goes in there :rolls: The trouble is, I have a big garden so I could really do with having a brown wheelie bin for the garden waste. As it is I tend to chuck it in the trailer and take it down the tip every couple of months.
Homespares are the best for packing. They screw up heavy duty refuse sacks and put them in the box. I’ve used those sacks for all sorts of things!

    Re: AEG Induction Hob

I found the 2 insulated gate bipolar transistors that power the rear right ring were reading short circuit and there was also an open circuit diode which turned out to be a 16 volt zener diode. The replacement bits came yesterday and I fitted them today. Now all 8 IGBTs and all the zener diodes are giving the expected meter readings but when I tried the hob it blew my new 20 amp fuse as soon as I turned on a ring 😥 I had not even got as far as trying the right hand rings i.e. the power board I had repaired. I was trying the left hand ones first but the fuse that blew is supposed to be the one feeding the right hand rings 😕 I suppose I should have taken the easy way out and just quoted for a new board. Then again, if the customer had said “go ahead, renew the board” and the hob was still blowing fuses after fitting a £359 power module, I suspect she would not be amused 😡 It looks as though the faulty power board must have damaged the filter board (Connect are quoting a retail price of £437 for a new filter board).

If the gas pipe has a bayonet connector you are allowed to disconnect that and you no longer have an appliance with gas connected 😉 These cookers have the gas on a flexible hose so you can pull them out for servicing. I think the thermostat is used for the fan oven as well as the conventional one so you could check it’s operation with the fan oven.

You can’t always test machines with the lid on. Every time I change brushes on an old style Hotpoint I run it to full spin speed with the lid off to check for sparking. Obviously if anyone gets too close I would warn them but I would not physically intervene unless it was a small child who could not understand my verbal warning.

When you say “turned off”, do you mean using the cooker switch on the wall? If so, the fault probably lies there rather than in the appliance. If it trips when you operate one of the knobs, which knob is it?

Well it had to happen some day, they have come up with a square fan oven element 😆 Do you think it was the same designer who did the Austin Allegro square steering wheel?

You often need to pack out the rear bearing spindle with washers to push the drum forward. If there’s a washer behind the bearing you can put it in front.

Your machine may not have a filter but you can trace the plumbing from where the drain hose enters the machine to the sump hose on the bottom of the tub. Between those points there will be a pump and possibly a filter. The pump is the first thing to check as it may be jammed with a coin, nail, rubber band etc. If it will drain by gravity it’s usually the pump, if it won’t drain by gravity it’s usually a blocked filter or hose. As usual, pull the plug before any investigations.

Don’t know about the Hotpoint but the AEG hob I’m doing with touch controls is easy enough. On the AEG you have to lift the glass off rather than lifting the rest of the appliance off the glass.

I usually just cut out the damaged bit of block and solder the wires direct to the pcb.

    Re: Surface Mount Components

    Thanks Dave,
I have emailed EGO in Germany who make the module. I did wonder about trying to measure voltages on the good board (there are individual boards for the 2 left and 2 right hand rings) but it would not be easy to operate the hob with it dismantled because of the touch controls. The diagnostics may not allow the hob to run with one module disconnected anyway.

I’ve changed a couple of bottom oven elements on these. You can’t tell what’s happening with the thermostat unless you disconnect the faulty element as one side is likely shorting to earth. As far as I’m concerned you can do jobs which don’t involve disturbing any gas plumbing or settings without being CORGI registered. I installed my own gas combi boiler but got a CORGI guy to plumb in the gas and commission it.

Re: AEG L84749 3-way valve changed – still hangs on rinse

Machines normally do at least 3 rinses and the conditioner is taken in at the final rinse. The instruction book may give details of the programmes i.e. how many rinses. It’s a pity you were not able to test the original valve with a multimeter. In cases like this I have sometimes tried adding water through the soap drawer using a watering can, to see if the machine starts up again given a certain level of water in the drum.
