Same as you Dave my local scrappy is more than happy to accept the old machines, keeps saying he will pay me something, still waiting but like you just happy to clear my feet.

Hi Steven,
For sometime now I have been taking a photo via my mobile phone when working on appliances in certain situations, these are when no one is at the premisses or removing a built in appliance as I have had customers insist that it was a better fit before I took it out.

ParticipantRe: parking nightmare
Must admit no problem in parking whatsoever most of my work is in country locations, Glen Isla, Glen Clova, Glen Esk plus small country towns.
As I drive around my calls I think I must have one of the most scenic routes in the UK with just a few yards walk to the customers front door.

ParticipantRe: cheek!
Unless this was made clear when the agent phoned you then as Martin says you should be demanding the full amount.
An arrangment by telephone is as good as a writen contract (proving it is another thing).
Did you tell them of your call charge? that should have been the point they mentioned the 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}.
I would contact them and say that no mention of deduction of your bill was mentioned at the time of booking and no offer was made to supply you with the terms and conditions in contracting you to work for them on behalf of their client.

ParticipantRe: To Charge or not to charge – that is the question
Thanks for that one Martin, I am sure you will support this garage after such good service.
Great debate this but please please, all posters on this one keep in mind I am talking about offering no more than a flick of a switch or push of a oven clock to reset back to manual when I am but a few streets away from an existing paid call and this only to my regular customers built up over many years, however if I have to open my tool case then my standard call charge would apply.
Thinking back, I have only made two no charge visits this year based on the above criteria————that is untill this morning.
What would you have done?.
7:45am Regular customer of mine phones, her Bosch fridge/freezer not
working, defrosting and no light on in fridge.
She has changed fuse, bought and fitted new bulb still no joy.
What would you do, and what did I do.1 Tell her the Bosch has a two year guarantee so contact them.
2 Arrange a call yourself reminding her of your call charge.
3 Ask her to try unit in another socket.Correct answer to “What did I do” will win two tickets for the following fictitious concert starring,
The Jimmyshandrix Experience and Ceilidh Mynogue

ParticipantRe: To Charge or not to charge – that is the question
Hi Martin,
Keep in mind that the no charge is for my regular customers only and it is when I am in the area and not a special trip in which case the customer would pay.
No need to dramatise the topic with scummy flats, we all know the areas we work and can suss out before hand what our approach will be.
In general I am talking about the odd occassion where such things as I mentioned above happen and I take much more than I give.

ParticipantRe: Supplier of new machines
Hi peeler40,
As mentioned above ISE or DAD is a good start, if it is any help this is what I do.Appart from repairing I sell washing machines, I do not have a shop but rent from one of these secure storage places for £15 per week all in.
My space will take 8 machines or 16 doubled up, when your customer is faced with a BER they are more likley to take your advice re “what should I buy” question, you then have to decide what that advice is and supply the product.
Your price should be competative based on your low overhead cost ie, your storage space.

ParticipantRe: To Charge or not to charge – that is the question
My system is the same as washdoctor, however if it is a regular customer
which I have built up a relationship with over the years I will reduce my charge to a small token keeping in mind that they have more than one appliance that they will call you out to sort. What about the no power fault, when you get to the house you find that the on/off switch above the worktop is in the off position, in and out in minutes, or the oven clock, by mistake the clock has been set to auto cook.
In my case I do not charge, the customer is usually over the moon at the flick of a switch re appliance working again and I know they do call me back should any other appliance require attention.
Keep in mind long term repeat custom is the key to success.

ParticipantRe: Yellow Pages
I ask all my customers where they got my number, most are recommendations, followed by our local paper then yellow pages, the pages still give me enough business to continue advertising tho next year I will cut my spending with them.
One place that brings me in new business is my local hairdresser, he agreed (50 quid cash in hand per year) to display three A4 posters in front of his chairs just below the mirrors, now we know how long women can sit having the hairdo so these posters get maximum exposure throughout the year and I know my 50 quid has been well spent.

ParticipantRe: Hoover WS130 fails to drain
First of all I hope you did all your investigation with 13amp plug out and any further inspection of parts also.
Have you checked the sump to pump hose and the pump housing where the sump hose connects, I have found many a 1p acting as a butterfly valve in here?.
