With Stoves hobs no, I worked for them for over 5 years and very rarely needed to re-grease gas taps on hobs.

ParticipantI am very experienced with range cookers and its Rangemaster or falcon all the way for me, if you dont want to go all out for a falcon the top of the range Rangemaster elan is now made with a ceramic top and has an excellent build quality, way above any other high street brand in this area.

Belling offers the xou90g
Stoves offer the 900gdo and 900gRdo (Fotostar model)Xou and gdo are the same cooker behind the doors and facia, Dont buy a GR without insurance as they can be very, very expensive to repair….. its Rotostar btw 😛 named after the fan burner.

ParticipantWouldnt touch the 50cm cookers with a barge pole if they are gas.

ParticipantDont know if you sorted this or not but it is usually the gauze (mesh) broken on the burner, would require a new grill burner.

Its more down to the specificaition – Just cos its made in the same facotry doesnt mean:
A cheaper cooker is built to the same quality as a more expensive one and vice versa.
QC is down to the the employees and the companys directives. the cannons are now made in poland by skilled and well trained employees meaning the QC on Indesit cookers is as good as a cannon but the actual build quality of the appliance will be only as good as the materials used for that batch and the specification of the design of the appliance.
Cannons are built with thicker metals and better quality components hence they work better and last longer.
And lets face it in the cooker world a 50cm cooker is either made by hotpoint (indesit, h/p, cannon) zanussi (elux zanussi aeg and bendix) beko (beko leisure new world and belling) or a really poor quality independant factory (frigidaire, micromark etc)I have not come across thicker metals being used on these appliances and the main reason for that is it would not make any financial sense, instead of one side panel production line you would need to run two, doesnt happen in modern cooker factories, the base cooker is always the same, the only difference is doors, knobs and set up on facia to make them look different, quality of working components which is the main thing for me is the same.

ParticipantRe: Having trouble finding a small cooker
Not sure how the cannon is much better quality as they’re made in 5he same factory unless its a single cavity indesit you have in, another version of the cannon is of course the hotpoints which I believe are cheaper, truth is though that none of them are that good really, my main bit of advice would be just to stay away from any 500mm single cavity cooker.

ParticipantFor this appliance you would need to go direct to Stoves who will probably offer you an insurance scheme over the phone…. take it if you want the appliance repairing as whatever is gone on this model will cost a fortune.

Cannonare probably about the best out there and it will probably be a name that your parents will know and trust. There are three models which are 50cm with lid Langdale, Keswick and the Coniston.
They’re only rebadged indesits now though arent they, you would probably save money by buying the cheaper indesit version.

ParticipantAlanStockport wrote:Sorry but I can’t see how the knob can ever be a problem on this model? It is clipped directly on to the valve spindle and unless physically damaged just translates the user push & rotation to the valve body (ok in this instance it also pushes against the paddle that operates the internal ignition button). Maybe the knob issue you refer to is with some other model?
PS On the SMEG website it is noticeable that replacement thermocouples have sprouted an extra earth lead.
Its fitted directly to the shaft on all cookers that I can think of that operate this sort of system…. but it doesnt stop problems happening even without damage to the control knob.
Its all to do withe the internal parts needing to make a good contact for the burner to stay on, you asked for advice from professionals and was told to try the first thing that we would try but you dismissed what we said, why come on for advice ?
My conclusion would be exactly the same as bryan and helo’s, the knob was pushed too far down the shaft thus stopping sufficient contact between the thermocouple and thermomagnet.
