Re: tdl30 front bearer felt strip

    *wince*

    :'(

    full story:

customer comes in and asks about new machines, offer to check old one first as it wasnt heating, beleiving it to jsut be stats. besides it came from us and was about 5 years old.

got there, well it was heating, but not going round. (customer) oh i didnt notice it wasnt going round and also didnt notice it was still getting warm…

anyway thing is i foolishly said if the belts gone, a repair is probably still worthwhile cos if you replace the drum bearers and belt its almost as good as a new machine for 1/4 cost. so as its lasted 5 years i figured she looks after it, so if she gets even 2 years from the repair its been worthwhile.

anyhoos… get it to the workshop (tiny tiny utility room) and the front bearer has worn thin, hasnt even got past the ahesive strip at the top. thinking this is good, wont be any damage to drum, ran my finger round hte inside to make sure and voila is smooth as anything

ordered above mentioned part and got the different part. had another look on connect and found 5031680438390 – front felt seal. looked almost identical to the other part bar a different colour – like the soundproofing on a bosch dw. also seemed a bit softer. just figured it was a different supplier. get it and ends up being stitched and self adhesive. think bingo ive cracked it. put it on and towards the bottom bit i find its a teeny bit large and gets “lumpy” where ive had to mke room for more than that what there should be.

anyway 3 days later get a call its making a odd sound and sticking in rotation. the drum has partially ripped it off.

so yeah im heamoraging margin on the repair now, so wont be worth my while ordering any more new spares probably. i have a handlful of scrap tvr2/vtd’s ive saved to rebuild the best ones which customers have declined a repair on and just ordered a replacement, is it worth me taking the whole front vent panel off one and putting it on the new machine along with fresh pads and strip? i can write the cost of the pads off as ive got a pack of electruepart ones that were pence for a full set, and ive got that strip that also came in that i would otherwise lose/have a 30{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} restocking hit on if i returned it…

or would i be better off taking the tvm560 she initially wanted up to her?!

    EDIT:

includes a new plastic vent, new drum, filter, seals, old style plastic bearing pads, new stats, back panel and extra fan. A snip at £87 plus vat

oops sorry jim just seen you also mentioned new stats, and extra fan. is that complete full set of stats or just a front one?

Even if I had one of the old type felt seals I would only fit it if the customer accepted the repair with no warranty whatsoever.

Id gladly take one off your hands for the £6 or so it cost. Theres no scratching or scraping on the drum lip at all – the belt went cos a baby sock slipped between the gap underneat the front support. hence beleiving a repair was viable :S

I think that baumatic washer was a vestelle made machine which have tended to be reasonable reliable for other branded washers. only ever sold 3 baumatics that came out of that factory (1000 spin/5kg load) and havent been contacted about them failing…yet

why thank you! its been a quiet week in the shop so… had no excuse!

i shall be bending plenty of ears for advice in my attempt to learn muchos about the innards of appliances, rather than just telling customers why more buttons is better

    Re: customer wont collect dryers

When I was at halfords we were allowed to sell the uncollected repaired bikes 3 months after the 3rd notication of work completion was issued by letter. we were only allowed to sell the bikes for the cost of the repair (ie labour and spares), and one person ended up with a £400 marin for £120 fully serviced. we also struggled to sell a universal for £80 so had to knock most of the labour off to get rid!

bear in mind the customer could be on holiday, ill or… kidnapped?!

my dad had a heart attack after a particularly aggressive day fixing things, fortunately one of our drivers used to be a nurse and noticed the early signs to rush him to hospital. hes pulled through now after major surgery but totally different person to before. has completely changed his mindset. and not always in a good way, including his attitude to certain types of customers!

In the weeks after I experienced a lot of the “but your a business you should be able to get cover for an ill person moron mentality attitude” some customers had. Its what got me interested in fixing the machines, as well as new sales, because I had to do the basic repairs and completing outstanding jobs for customers who couldnt acknowledge he was in a hospital bed whilst he was recoveing.

And i bet those people of that mindset will be teh ones who avoid all major illness, and get to 80 and complain about everything.

ill never forget the day i was delivering a new freezer. it was to an old old country property of a hoarder – stuff everywhere, piled very high and not been moved for decades! really musty damp smell when you walked in. half the stuff was on the old freezer that had “died a few weeks ago” which we were going to remove.

anyway, got it clear, noticed a odder more pungeant smell, discounted it as i assumed it was something leftover in the freezer and leant down tipped fridge forward with my colleage, and shoved my hand under the back compresser bar.

    mistake.

the rotting slightly singed corpse of a rat that took a fancy to the cable was between the freezer and my hand and it wasnt that, that made me feel sketchy, it was the squechy oozey feeling as the freezers weight compressed its body enough to to spluge its innards over my hand that got me.

i couldnt actually eat all day…

    Re: Who is responsable

IVE always managed to politely ensure an engineer gets to a customers faulty appliance to avoid situations like this.

The fact of the matter is that it states clearly in most guarantee cards that a replacement machine will only be authorised after the relevant engineer has inspected it. I dont htink you can hold DAD responsible because its accepted practise (and im sure its in the TOS somewhere too) that uplifts will not be authorised without an uplift code. if you authorise an uplift/exchange with tehcustomer, its on your own back!

With the now widespread use of internet shopping, customers have now wrongly assumed the 7day cooling off period also applies to shop bought goods where the customer has had a chance to inspect the good prior to payment being taken. The entitlement to an exchange is only valid IF the goods cannot be satisfactorly repaired within a reasonable period of time. Also, an entitlement to an exchange of shop-sold unused goods is at the retailers discretion.

If they get stressy about it ask them how mnay times its worked befor going wrong. Any answer other than right away will invalidate an automatic exchange. Largely cos the goods were working and now arent, as opposed to not working from the off. If they then start quoting sales of goods acts, the best response is to offer to call the manufacturer immediately, as they are the only ones who can authorise an immediate uplift of an appliance which hasnt failed on install!

The most important tool you can have at your till is a terms and conditions of sale statement in position easily viewd by the customer at the point of transaction. You will need to include on that, wording of the nature “exchanges can only be given on appliances that have been unused or whereby the manufacturer has authorised an exchange”

    Re: Zanussi sticking on cycle

yet if you were held up and “only” just miss them by even half an hour, by the time u get back to your shop its a case of “you obviously dont need the business, so theres not much point in coming now as ive got someone else coming out now”

or u get a call at 3.05 asking where you were because you were supposed to be at their house at 3. when they were booked into a 3-5 slot… “oh but i thought you were going to be here from 3 until 5”

    customers can be really infuriating

Jim this caught my attention because I was led to believe spacing it out with metal washers would end up cutting into the shaft and shortening the life of it unless the washers were nylon? Just wondered if this was genuinely possible?

Was the L-bracket over the heater casing there to stop the rear panel flexing for the precise reason it had the old drum? its just i note the newer dryers with the new drums dont have them

We meet again eh suede 😀 !!! yes im finally here…

No I havent any old boards for these 😉

    Cheeky sod.

Connect also have it listed as out of stock, and the £46 + vat is 1/4 of cost of a bosch@trade, so considering how temperamental the electronics seem to be for this model, and the fact its 7 years old…

Ill have a chat with them but I know if it is the pcb I think the grandparents would prolly rather buy a new dishwasher, (but ill surprise them with an early christmas present if it looks like its going down that route)

Just would really like to. *FIX*. it. 👿 frustrated 👿

So if anyone has any step by step guides on acurrately testing the heater circuit components on the board/how to identify a corrupt component id like to have a go at replacing it – its been 10 years since i studied the basics of electronic engineering so im a bit rusty, but as its a shot to nothing i can only end up learning something 😯
