ParticipantRe: How Washing Machine’s Changed The World
True that the price of high-tec items including washing machines has fallen in real terms continuously for about the last fifteen years. I don’t think you can blame Rosling for leaving that out of his presentation. It was aimed at an audience to inform / entertain / stimulate interest and he wouldn’t have wanted to over-complicate things. There’s only so much people can absorb at once. I think the piece wasn’t really about washing machines so much as about the changing world economy in general.
Anyway, I’ve discovered there’s a repeat of his excellent, “The Joy of Stats” tomorrow at 11.20pm on beeb2. Well worth a look if you haven’t seen it before; and maybe even if you have.kwatt wrote:I could go on, but no-one gives. ;)K.
No, they do but your observation was not so obvious as you thought. Some of us would like you to go on 🙂 .

ParticipantRe: Feel the weight
I remember hearing about this development in the early 90s. I thought it had somehow already been incorporated into the electronics via something I completely don’t understand called, “fuzzy logic.” (Which nevertheless sounds like my kind of logic.) I had imagined today’s more sophisticated boards were getting some sort of feedback on the load size from the amount of current the motor was using, to enable them to adjust the water level or something. Must admit, I stopped thinking about it about ten years ago when it didn’t seem to be causing any trouble!

See other recent thread for this model.
Engineers with the TDS disc (which I haven’t got) will ask you for PNC number before they can help you 😉 .

The newer ones have a float switch in the base, just like dishwashers. Door seals are prone to get torn lip and dribble down front into base. Ask customer if any sign of damage to seal.

Diagnostics are great but there are so many different models / fascia styles within Lux group it’s difficult to remember them all. If you’ve got an account with Connect you can get most through mediator. And you’ve given the PNC above so someone with a TDS will probably send you something.
Otherwise, try unplugging hoses on p/switche(s), checking sump, valve coils (softener valve?), etc.

Have a good look at motor. Probably loose connection / break in wire somewhere. Tacho magnet even. (Don’t know this model, so I’m just going by symptoms.)

Diagnostics will help of course. Will probably be available through mediator on Connect website if you have account there.
Failing that or no-one has sent them, just look for low insulation, &/or condensation on motor brush holders. Unplug suspect component (heaters, motor etc.) in turn and see if machine will then start.

Maybe element is beginning to fail and gradually leaking more current to earth as it is on for longer periods. It’s often such things which lead to jumpy electronics.

ParticipantRe: H/point DW DWF61 (Bosch) Motor Starter Melted?
Do you mean a brown plastic cased ptc device which fits onto the terminals on top of the motor? I have one I bought for a slimline Bosch about ten years ago. The old one was burnt and the motor was running slow, so I replaced it but it made no difference. When nothing else worked to fix that damn’ machine I whipped my starter back off and have taken it to almost every Bosch dw job since just in case but never had to use it! PM / e-mail me with your address if you’d like it.

That’s a surprise to me too. So what happens when the float chamber gets full then?

Not much hope for Cameron’s “Big Society” up there then 😆 .

Had a < 5 y.o.(not sure exact age) Miele do something similar with its on/off pcb a few months back. Customer was a fully-fledged electrician yet even with our two heads working together for two hours we didn't manage to get the machine going again. (At least I still got paid for trying.) When I left he was still convinced it would be righted by simply getting a new pcb/switch. I wasn't convinced of that but left him to it. Never heard what happened. Mind you that was a more "electronic" machine.

At last, an answer to my question! Thanks Mark.
Not had the dubious pleasure of meeting one with a pcb down there yet.
