And youre to be applauded for that simonb, i really mean that, its a very environmentally sound thing to do
And if youre making a buck from it, all the better. I just never found a way round the spurious, timewasting calls in the guarantee period. youre brave with that years guarantee 😯 😉 )

Maybe the Scots like a bit more than their moneys worth? 😉 dunno, but i’ll just stick to repairs i think. 🙂

Still think its UBER hassle. Like the OP described, it was mostly imagined faults the owners would drag you back for.
That, & snapped door handles.. had a few heated debates about whether door handles were covered by my guarantee.. i said no.. they said yes :rolls:
Gave up doing landlord jobs for similar reasons.. piggy in the middle is not where i wanna be 😉

I just wonder in all seriousness WHY all you guys who sell used machines still do it 😕 Dont get me wrong, i’m all for re-cycling & its great that a landfill bound appliance ends up giving a few more years useful service.. great in theory at least 😯

In practice i’ve found that people will complain MORE about a hundred odd quid appliance than they will about one costing five times that!
Only did it a few times over the years, carefully selected machines, carefully selected punters.. still HASSLE!!
Still, each to their own, i take my hat off to all who do it 🙂 😉

Ahh, but if youre willing to get down & dirty with a pair of pattern Bosch brushes & a soldering iron, its suprising how you can beat the system.. if however it explodes, showering your punter in commutator segments… you aint seen me.. right? 😉

The current dryers are ok though.. have one myself 😯

We’ll be able to wear suits to work when that happens and not get our hands dirty. 😆
    Mike.

An interesting thought Mike. While i hate the whole wasteful welded drum thing, if thats the way the things are going then we will just have to make the most of it.
In one way, if as you say we can eventually source the units at reasonable money, it will be nice to just whack a complete tub in not much more than half an hour. No more swearing at stuck bearing races, peering at spider shafts & wondering whether to reuse or scrap & no more listening to customers assurances that they’ve ‘only run it for 2 days noisy’, when the metal dust where the bearings used to be tells you it was probably somewhat longer :rolls:

Yip, i must admit as i get older a really tough bearing job is something i dont really look forward to any more & 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} less hassle would be fairly appealing to be honest.

Just not sure if A. the prices for the things will ever come down enough to be economically viable. B. It will be possible to keep in stock all the drum types we encounter, they are rather bulky items. & C. If it will be possible to have these things re-cycled cost effectively.? Hmmm having a few bearing & spider kits in stock seems far simpler come to think about it.. 😕

Did the very same job yesterday phidom, 1 inch screw was trapped in the usual position at the front of the drum. Used an old short tyre lever 😯 to open up a gap ‘tween the two drums, screw then fell down into the bottom of the tub.
Removed the heater & fished it out with an old coat hanger 😉

Very easy for them to mold the brush assembly’s into the casing as well i would imagine, another opportunity for them to make a wearing part impossible to replace, like the bearings in sealed drums.
Or am i being too cynical.. cant imagine why :rolls: :rolls:

Re: How to seperate sealled Drum

Yep, i do love to beat the system where possible, but the sealed drum is the one thing theres no way round IMO. Perfect example of built in obsolescence.. the fella who thought of that one must have been given a big fat bonus to be sure :rolls:
Still live in hope that somehow the manufacturers will be forced to go back to fitting drums with replaceable bearings, but thats probably wishful thinking. All we need now is sealed motors with non replaceable brushes & the completely disposable washer will be well & truly here.. with some machines available for £150 you could argue they’re already here of course 😯

I’ve used the 13mm bolts & washers from the 9/5 & WM spider kit as i seem to have tons of them for some reason 😯 They dont foul the outer drum & the washer seems to grip the stainless very nicely.. never had a call back 😉

I now avoid the half moons at all costs, after several failures with gen & non gen (2 to 4 months average 😥 ) i simply cant be ar$ed with them any more. What annoyed me most was when a long standing & valued customer asked if i was “fitting used parts because of the economic situation”

Had thought of drilling a couple of holes ( with cust permission 😉 ) & fitting a standard 2 turn ele of some description but modifications & really hot things sometimes dont mix 😯

I do actually have one of those Martin..(a meter..not a gorgeous blonde!) but thought the machine might get sniffy about not havin a 2k load on & misbehave itself, hence my spare heater idea 😯

I dunno, i think i’ll have to pop back & drag the PCB off for a proper look. This workload is gettin on my t*ts, one week its so busy theres no time to breathe & i’m workin on a sat eve, rushing jobs, next week its DEAD.

Anyway.. thats my prob 🙂 😥

Do you know what Martin, i was in such a rush to get finished (6pm on sat eve 🙁 ) i didnt think to check! I certainly didnt see my spare ele starting to glow in the couple of mins after fill.
Are you thinking relay prob on board?? would that stop the drum though. Strange one 😕

Cheers Galway, did remove all connections on board when i was there just to eliminate the possibility. Yep, i’ll keep the old flow meter when i go back to the job & have a play with it. Think i heard Maplins are a source of these reed switches??
