Ah, I had not appreciated it was a duel fuel appliance. It is always worth mentioning this point when making a query on here or booking a repair visit.

No, you can’t buy the seal. Rule of thumb is WMA type 1604473 big bearings have an alloy pulley, machines with the 30mm shaft and 1604600 bearings have a plastic pulley.

You will need a new selector switch and you will need to renew any burnt sections of wire. I just checked the online shop section of this site but they don’t list the switch. If you use the enquiry form facility they should be able to advise price and availability. Unfortunately I can’t find the manufacturers part number for the switch but it is listed as type 3073/21. Sometimes damage like this occurs if one of the wires to the switch was loose and sparking. Make sure on the new switch that all the spade terminals are secure. If any feel loose the female spades can be closed up slightly with pliers. Power off, of course :zap:

Will have to try the ratchet spanner. The 1/4″ drive socket and ratchet handle are tight against the cabinet back by the time the 2″ long screws are out.

What you have been doing up to now is not what we would call troubleshooting so instead of a next step, what you need is a different approach:

First check if other functions like the grill are working. If they are not you then check the main terminal block where power goes into the appliance. If they are you then make sure the timer is set to manual. If it is on manual you may have a faulty thermostat or thermal overload cutout or function switch or even a faulty timer. Note that I have not yet considered the possibility of an element or fan fault because both are not working and they are unlikely to have failed together. The thermostat, TOCs, and timer all work as switches and can be temporarily bypassed by joining wires together but obviously you can only do that safely if you know which wires to join.

No, I’ve never done that with a washing machine but I have a few times with dishwashers. I didn’t like doing it and I’ve given up repairing dishwashers since then. On most machines I remove the motor to change the brushes. I must admit it is a pain on the plastic tub Bosch machines as you can’t use an electric screwdriver and you cut your hands to ribbons on the razor sharp edges of the too-small back panel opening.

A universal single circuit type should do the trick provided you connect it up right. You can order them via this site, using the shop@ facility, part No. ER1401 :

Yes, I think you will find that the extra wire goes to the motor casing instead of the usual green and yellow earth wire.

I may be wrong but I think that’s how it worked with CORGI, you had to stay up to date in training/exams for each type of appliance, fires, cookers, boilers etc, not to mention LPG :rolls:

    Re: Zanussi FLS1185QW

Found the problem, a pinhole in the NTC 😀 When I checked the NTC initially I got a reading of 21K which is about right. At the time I had not tested the machine with water, I had only been trying it on spin and at that stage it seemed to complete a spin OK, much to the surprise of the customer. They had been using it on the L wash so I tried that next and witnessed the sort of problems described earlier.
Yesterday I was given a rather rusty but working Zanussi Nexus. I decided to fit the complete top panel from that plus wiring harness to the non rusty but faulty FLS1185QW. This is fairly easy, you just disconnect the motor, pump, heater etc wiring, unscrew the interlock, pull off the pressure switch pipes and lower the suspension springs. The top panel can then be unscrewed and lifted off, complete with fascia, soap dispenser, timer, switches, valves, pressure switches etc and the harness retaining trunking just unclips from the cabinet. In this case there was a complication in that the Nexus has 2 pressure switches so I had to also fit the Nexus filter housing with the extra hose outlet. Tried it, same symptoms as before 😥 Tried swapping motors, no different. Tried swapping NTCs, success. Checked the resistance again on the old NTC now only 5K. I suppose on my first visit they had not tried the machine for a few days and the NTC had dried out but when I tried it on a wash it had filled with water, lowering its resistance.

You may struggle to find anyone with the correct ticket to work on gas tumble dryers. We certainly don’t have anyone round here and I have to advise customers to scrap it and get an electric one 🙁

Is it worth it for such a rubbish machine? I have seen those written off at 18 months old.
