    Re: Spin failure

The usual problem with these is leakage from the dispenser, due to the cap that syphons the softner out getting bunged up, this water flows down the inside of the front of the cabinet right on to the door interlock often causing a short out which may in turn of blown the module/timer. This could be your spin problem as well.
whatever, its a complex machine and expert help may be required. If you do investigate yourself, be sure to pull the plug first.

Just taken a £80 mail order from someone in Ayrshire, wherever that is. How did they find us? from UKW!

Re: The most expensive C**k up

We did go into a rented house after collecting the key from the agent to repair the Hotpoint there. Our guy found the bearings shot and a hole in the door seal but he did it ok. The front bearing being a bit of a swine that took ages to remove but all was done eventualy and he left.
In the morning the agent rang up to report that the Hotpoint dishwasher was still leaking just as bad as before we visited! 😳

    RS wrote:Hi all:

Being new to UKW I have read just about all the forums and enjoyed myself immensely, and having seen Kwat’s anecdotes I just wondered how many of you will come clean to the most expensive cock-up you have ever made?

Since I started it here’s mine:

When I was just a lad I was stuck working on Princesses or empresses doing the rollers, changing drive gears and seals, my mentor had gone for some parts so I decided to have a look at the twin tub he had brought in earlier in the day, I plugged it in and tried the wash and the spinner both seemed to work ok so I turned it on it’s side to observe it running from the bottom. Switching the machine on I tried the wash side and saw smoke coming from the motor so I thought that must be what it was in for.

Not having seen this machine from this vantage point before I tried the spinner and smoke was coming from that motor as well I just thought this must be scrap and how much time I had saved him stripping it down, I thought he would be pleased with my efforts not knowing anything about relays having to be upright and such I received a right royal telling off for my efforts and he made me pay for two new fields as well.

    You live and learn 😳

Never done that myself, but had a shop customer who I sold belts too as “it was about time it had some” who decided to test it upside down after fitting them, it was only a minor conflagaration….. only 2 fire engines required.

if its only cracked where the door spring tensions, (the usual reason for changing the door rim) then you can get a little mod kit that saves the door rim. 481931038624.

    Brandt should be mentioned here.

Door interlock to us is a “Magnetic Bolt” to those at Brandt. (this has neither a magnet or a bolt in it)

Door seal, they term as a “Sleeve”

MFI however have to win the prize for the best packed spares. All their packaging is brand new (rather than knackered Walkers crisp boxes) and well thought about.

Mind you I have cut myself severel times on the razor sharp edges of their boxes!

    Re: Smeg range ~ Commutators

I dont think its the commutators that are crap, its the spade terminals that seem not to ever be tight enough which in turn cause the plastic (if it were bakerlight it wouldnt be a problem) of the switch to melt and the contacts move out of position which makes it heat up even more and hence melt even more. For a long lasting repair, change all the spades or at least the ones that are on the terminals that have failed.

Dont worry chris, we have all been confused by that commutator word being used by SMEG etc but we all use now it just to confuse everyone else.

I would be very wary of doing that without the service manual as it is easily possible to either change or wipe out the configeration of the software if you hit the wrong button at the wrong time. Just be careful out there that you dont make it any worse and need it reconfigered just to establish what the original fault was. +knowing the last error code may be useful information for any engineer who may visit.

I think most of the staff building Bosch Maxxs will be eating tappas for lunch rather than Bratwurst.

If its made in Germany it will proudly announce it on the front, if its not it will quietly mention made in the EEC on the back.

The wash vac bin # is 023773. I am at home right now so unable to convert it to a lux number.
We have done 50+ over the years! beats constant recalls for belts off and heater stats needing re setting.

    Re: PAT Testing

Toni, have you really got that much spare time on your hands? I did a bit of this some years back and its very time consuming with a lot of paperwork too. You really need software to admin it all and in some respects you may be responible for reminders to test again in the future and if anything goes wrong you will be first in line. Back then, electricians were charging PENCE per items after an initial charge for admin. Not that it is not lucrative, but it just eats up your time.

By the way, I am sure CELTEK: http://www.celtekuk.com/ in Preston charge far less than that quoted for a calibration.

and also, by the way, not wanting to cast any doubts on the integrity of your supplier of this, but i did have a PAT1000 stolen from a van a couple of years ago. My postcode is engraved on the bottom with a soldering iron!
