If you get one of them kits adv, please take a close look at it and compare it to this one:

Always worth looking for low insulation faults ( <40Mohm ) of any kind on Lux machines. Whether or not you find such, try unplugging motor, heater in turn to see what reaction you get. Then of course there's the possibility of the p/switches getting in a tiz because there's a colourcatcher stuck somewhere in the sump hose or the table tennis ball is obstructed from it's normal behaviour.

Wasn’t there something about heating elements or their connections cauing such faults on Bosch?

in reply to: BEKO WME7267W Washing machine-locked on prog! #365401

Re: BEKO WME7267W Washing machine-locked on prog!

Possibly that was all happening before you even started the remedial work and the customer, not being in the habit of cancelling programmes, had not noticed that aspect and therefore did not mention it to you.
Beko electronics have always been vulnerable to mysterious behaviour for no apparent reason. Not really all that surprising when you look at the mind-boggling complexity of their boards – more chips than Harry Ramsden’s. The boards, as with most other Beko components, did used to be relatively inexpensive. I hope you will find that situation has not changed too much.
Perhaps it could be worth looking to see if there are any “domed” electrolytic capacitors in evidence or a large rectangular blue, grey or yellow plastic one. If you find such a thing, having a value of 1 or 1.5uF desolder it and check the value with a capacitance meter.

This may be a red herring but having had not long ago a Whp dw giving exactly that symptom and being helped by Dave electrofix to a happy ending in that story, it wouldn’t surprise me too much if the module might be fixed easily enough. PM me if interested in having a go.

    Re: Smeg / Hotpoint WM16AAA / BWM20 Prob. spider/brng Age?

Well I went up there today and I am a bit puzzled. First of all the lip of the drum is not well centred. There’s a gap of around 8mm at one point whilst it’s just touching the seal on the opposite edge.
I was almost convinced it was a spider job but could not detect any movement whatsoever. There was a little noise of metal against rubber once every rev. but I put this down to lip / doorseal but I suppose could be bearing seal? Then put a couple of large towels in and got em wet and waited the time it took to complete a spin programme :study: When I woke up again, I realised that it wasn’t actually making much noise at all. There was just a couple of short scratching noises once or twice as though something like a bra-wire might be getting tossed around. I removed the heater element to have a look in there for anything but found nothing and decided it was perhaps the table tennis ball popping up now and again and touching the distorted drum. Looking through the heater hole it was evident the drum was equally out of kilter on it’s back perimeter as at the front. But it did not in any way seem to be detached from the spider nor to have any fracture 😕 . No damage to heater clip either.
I squeezed the heater grommet back into its hole which only took about a quarter of an hour 👿 , re-assembled and tested for leaks. Took my fee and told them to carry on using until there was something more recognisably faulty. Showed my mate exactly how to test for spider fracture so should only get a call if there’s something really amiss.

Re: Unprogrammed PCB to the public

Hmph. Regarding the likelihood of Defra getting involved in so much as talking to Merloni about something that probably isn’t as yet actually illegal, well that seems a bit of a long shot to me. The OFT perhaps, but the thing is how many Joe public punters are actually being ripped off? My guess would be not very many at all. Maybe the odd one will grudgingly go ahead and spend another £105 and moan about Hotpoint to everyone they know but not actually do anything about it. There is enormous consumer protection in their favour and Merloni will refund their money as long as the board has not been fitted and more than likely would view their claim sympathetically if they said they’d been misled, and would offer some sort of deal if they had unknowingly fitted the board first before wondering what “un-programmed” meant.
TBH, I doubt Merloni are doing this deliberately to rip anybody off. It’s just that they’re too massive an organisation and too busy thinking about how to make an even cheaper machine to worry about the odd disgruntled punter so it hasn’t crossed any director’s mind yet that there’s a potential problem. It might be worth you writing a letter to them Mal, pointing out the problem if you’re really concerned for Joe. That is all the OFT would do in the first instance but it would take them about 12 months and fifty grand to “launch an investigation” first.
Meanwhile the guy in the call centre who said, “not my policy, take it up with Hotpoint” would probably be given a black mark if he was actually impolite. You gotta have some sympathy with him; you wouldn’t want his job!

in reply to: What’s this component on Miele W504 board? #364663

Re: What’s this component on Miele W504 board?

Well, I’ve burnt some more midnight oil on this board and the only thing I can find is a trace of possible smoke – could be something, could be nothing, generally spread over the board but may have emanated from the general area of the “triac”(actually an “insulated gate bi-polar transistor” 😕 ). Also there is a 33 milli-ohm 2W smd resistor in series with the “triac” between its emitter and the -ve of the bridge rectifier. This resistor is very slightly humped as though it might have got a tiny bit hot although it measures up more or less OK. (Not sure my meter is sufficiently accurate at that level.) Anyone know what its purpose is? Can’t find one of exact same value at RS.
Shall return to job today as it’s only a couple of streets away and look for loom damage (prompted by reading the new, “related topics” feature with which I am quite impressed – it’s certainly better than the manual search at the moment) and try and persuade customer that I need more time.

in reply to: hotpoint WD420g varying motor action #364701

Re: hotpoint WD420g varying motor action

The thing is you have to do what’s best for the customer! And in this case, and until one of us cracks this particular fault, your best way of serving them (IMO) in cases such as this, galling as it may be, is to send them to Hotpoint. I still took my (relatively meagre) call-out charge on that one. And the customer was quite willing to pay it, since I’d spent an hour trying to suss it and she knew I was giving her the best advice! If you try to fix this yourself, e.g. by chancing a module, you could end up losing out and the customer probably loses out too in down-time and uncertainty.
Next time, when the brushes or the pump goes, you get the job!
And Hotpoint pays for their own mistakes 😉 .
