On the assumption that you get a reasonable degree of heat (above say 100c) then a faulty PTC is the likely suspect. What is the full model number suffix ?

Oh goodness me yes I fully understand your concerns here. Imagine a hob top swimming in baby oil the way Bryan assumed it is applied and then you fire up a gas flame, oh no!

Chromol is your ONLY solution it seems. I can run with that, if only to prevent further idiotic comments from ‘others’ that Bryan was so tempted to moderate.

Meanwhile live long and rust free my friend.

The motor unit (part no 00654575) will set you back £91.38 direct from Bosch.

I’ve just taken an interest in Rapport and was surprised by the online demo. I really do need to visit Specsavers. 🙁

Check out the motor, especially the brushes.

jlt wrote:One of the rings on my ceramic hob just stopped working halfway through cooking dinner. Is this likely to be repairable, and, if so, is it a DIY job?

Of course it is repairable. Most likely the element has failed and needs replacing. It’s a tricky DIY job but if you’ve got the tools and a test meter, power disconnected and in you go!

You’ll need to look up the model number as there’s dozens of variants but spare parts readily available all over the inter web.

If it’s a challenge too far for you then I suggest you contact a local repair firm. Far cheaper than calling out Hotpoint.

You’ll have to be careful here. Is that just for the motor or just the pump section or the motor/pump complete? If you found it on Fleabay then good luck with that.

paullove wrote:I have not removed the pump so not sure how difficult it is to replace,

It’s a challenge for the amateur that’s for sure.

paullove wrote:or if need any more parts to complete the job.

That’s often the reason why many DIYers have appliances in bits for days on end whilst they find more parts are required. But one part you’ll need is a thin jubilee clip the fits between the pump housing and heater.

    Good luck …!

Hard to get hold of and costs silly money. There are cheaper alternatives of stainless steel cleaners available sold everywhere even your local corner shop sells it. But I assume bmrenr has already used a cleaner and simply wants to prevent rust returning.

Baby oil is odourless and, if applied correctly, leaves a microscopic film across the surface to protect and prevent corrosion. It is used AFTER the surface has been cleaned. It also is fantastic at preventing finger marks. A must especially on American style fridge freezers.

I’ve just noticed the same effect using my iPhone, very odd. I thought perhaps it was something you had done Ken to make your name stand out above all others. Clearly not then as you have no clue what I’m referring to. Fancy that now. 😀

Odd though it may sound but a well documented treatment for all stainless appliances is BABY OIL. Go check out the many Google sites and read for yourself.
