ModeratorRe: UKW Feb 2006
Perhaps Bryan can bring his little brother Ian from Penn Domestics along to this one. It’ll be right on his doorstep. I just happened to bump into him on my UKW travels. He may even help him to steady his tripod, though it looked more like a quadpod while our beloved Bryan was takin’ his snapshots 😆
I dare say i’ll see the rest of you guys proppin’ up ther bar as usuall 😉Sean

You also need to tell the customer to :-
seperate whites from colours when washing
dont overload the drum
do a water hardness test to work out the correct dosage
do a regular 90 degree maintinance wash with a biological detergent to keep the tub crud free.

ModeratorRe: The Future Of DASA
A little reality check is called for here, just because those of us in this war room are some of the most vocal in the trade and the fact that UKW is widely read, it does not necessarily follow that every one agrees with all of our views , ambitions or everything we say.
It seems a little strange that when UKW talk to work providers it is called an “INITIATIVE ” but when others do it is called a ” SELL OUT “
Either there is merit in talking to them or there isn’t, full stop.
We are starting to give the impression of being the ‘DOG IN THE MANGER’ and that we are the only organisation that anyone is allowed to comunicate with and to me that’s a load of b-ollocks.
No one, and I mean no one has tried harder than I to get both sides working together. So far all I’ve managed to do is get both sides pissed off at me for defending the other.
If you don’t like who’s in charge of DASA, then tough. Its your own fault for walking’ away with the job half done.
It is still my firm belief that we need both but we need both to be effective
and that can never happen while we are constantly tearing at one another’s throats. To the point where we are being forced to choose between one or the other.UKW are leading the way with drive imagination and the vision of a future in this trade. I am convinced that this will be achieved but it doesn’t have to be achieved by kicking at dead dogs. Allow people to rally to our banner for the common sense approach and realistic ideas that we have applied thus far and not because they’ve nowhere left to go.

ModeratorRe: Update
This might be a task for the Advisory Council. We all know how they just love proof reading stuff ( I can hear the groans already 😆 ) They will certanly know how to knock any rough edges off it. They did a sterling job of the Charter amendments and have been carefully chosen to represent the broad spectrum of firms that exists among the independents.

Hi Chunks,
No two years is not a reasonable life span for an appliance. So if you have the reciept for the appliance and can prove that it is only two years old then contact the manufacturer and ask them for thier comments first before you take it any further.
They may ask you to get thier own engineer in to inspect it first before they will make any comment, which is only fair.
If you are not happy with thier response then take it to the small claims court for a judgment as any appliance is required by law to be of merchantable quality and last for a reasonable period of time. So if what you say is correct. Then contact the manufacturer without delay. As you may very well have a strong case.

Kev no one questions your guts when it comes to leadin from the front you have already prooved this in spades the last time with the mfi debacle. You took the hit and did’nt mouth off when others did’nt support you like they should have.
But on the CDSL row you should construct the ammunition but let those who cant be hurt anymore fire it off fo you. UKW LTD is not totally self sufficent as yet, I dont think we’re far away but we’re not quite there yet.
You have advised others to stand thier ground when they have disputes
and that my friend is all anyone can expect you to do.Your sailing too close to the wind at the moment as regards CDSL we are not looking for martyrs we are looking for good statergy and going public with what we know at this early is questionable.
The most worrying thing is that UKW admin seems to be publicly at odds with one another and just on the launch of our first project this is a bad thing.
Please can we mull things over just a little in the board room or in a conference chat before we launch salvo’s off as we at this level we should be talking with one unified voice.

ModeratorRe: CDSL
Kevin it is my opinion that they dont give a toss wether they have the capacity or not. Their track record so far is that they have consistantly grabed at every contract going irrespective of the fact that given the choice we wouldn’t have touched a good number of them with a bargepole.
How many of us, that had this work before from other sources, really wanted to do L.G. or Brandt or Dedietrich if the choice had been given to us .
But it was presented as an all or nothing deal. CDSL were arogant enough to believe that they would not be messed around due to their size and would get better terms than those who controled the work before them.
The above firms form the filling and the currys work, the bread, in this particular shit sandwich. obviousley we were all hoping for a little more bread to make it more palatable.
Dont think for one minute that Phil is the only one that will be passed calls in your post codes, after all he’s not to know that the call was originally passed to you espeacially if the job has been given a new number. They are simply sending you a little message is all.
If they even get half a chance of more work they will grab it and worry about thier capacity later, thier reach will always exceed their grasp.
Thats the nature of the beast
Just like me the more you kick off with them, the more of the shit filling you’ll recieve.I dont ask you or anyone else to agree with me I am simply stating my honest opinion for what it is worth.
They have shown little or no regard for the members of their network when we have expressed our concerns, they have for the most part, been met with indifference, threats, and duplicity where they go behind your back to give others your work when you raise legitamate issues.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing perhaps the one thing that we should have all considered as a group would have been to draft our own joint contract when we take on volume contracts like this for a little more fairness and equity and get them to sign ours too.
Just a thought

So the work is about to quadruple. I’m sorry but that should make the alarm bells ring in your head. A lot of the guys say CDSL are too big now, so when that 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} becomes 60{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Alex will it be so easy to walk away then. If they are turnin’ the thumb screws now, what will they do when they convince themselves that they own you.
We always keep sayin’ to one another ‘DONT HAVE ALL YER EGGS IN ONE BASKET’ Well by the look of it that is just what is about to happen.
When they were lookin for guys to back them during the tussle with NESN
Dave parker was runnin round sayin we were goin to get £40 a call and I know that I wasn’t the only one he said it to.
Well it’s nearly two years on and still it hasn’t happened.Remember MFI were already paying us that way back then.
What they actually did was renauge on the mark up on spares then chucked in a couple of quid and tried to convince everyone that they were goin to be better off.
The keep it going for another 28 day’s merchants might have been but not the ones who were taking the time to do a proper job
And now it’s the same old tale of ‘JAM TOMORROW’ We have all taken a hit on the recent fuel hikes and has any one of e’m offered you more to cover your rise in cost’s. Not a single one ! and least of all CDSL who are so convinced of the colossal workload they are about to cash in on.
You think that they would be able to dig a little deeper.
At the end of the day the work goes to the network who rates your skills the cheapest and can keep you in line.Sean

ModeratorRe: Welcome To A New Way Forward
Perhaps we could do with a training module in appliance sales techniques.
The truth of the matter is that customers are always asking the engineer which is the best machine to buy and for years and years guys have been missing the oppurtunity to make a sale because they didn’t have the infrastructure to back them up with spares, tech info, logistics.
I really feel that from here on in an ever inreasing part of our members
turnover is going to be sales, and installations.Seriously though we might consider developing a bullit point, point of sale
card to issue the guys so that they can inform the customer of the several
advantages our product will have over the sheds. Not least of which will be the fact that our service back up and after sales service will be second to none.Lets face it customers will always trust an expeienced engineers opinion far above that of some pimple faced adolescent in a shed.

Martin, you should know by now that the old maestro plays us all like a fiddle. He just dont care if we like his sales technique positive or negative. It’s just being ignored that bugger cant stand. 😉

ModeratorRe: Help Yourself First
Ken,
Chill a little.
Its like anything new, this concept has caught a lot of people on the hop and they cant quite get their heads round it ,as it all seems too good to be true.
For all those members of UKW who made that special effort and to come to the National meeting at Sibson and have signed up to all this have had the tremendous advantage of seeing and hearing the concept fully explained, described and presented to them in a way that lets them see the perfect logic behind it all. Not to mention the incredible potential that this project could bring to them and their businesses.
You could see the look of disbelief on the faces in the room, of those in attendance and the murmerings of “why hasn’t this been done before now”!.
The reason it couldn’t have been done before now is quite simply that we have not been a viable unified comunity until now. just a collection of individuals who before UK Whitegoods came along were very insular and introspective in our outlook towards our own businesses and existance.
I also think that some fear that by simply downloading the application form and information pack, that they are somehow entering into some sort of legal and binding contract, rediculous as it may sound.
Although the admin team have been working on this herculian task for over a year now to bring this all to fruition. The membership at large has only been made aware over the last few weeks and need a little time to let the possibilities of all this to sink in.
Have no fear, the membership are already gearing up their far to bright to let this one slip by. They may be a little slow out of the traps but they’ll all get onboard as the snowball gathers momentum, their just waiting to see who blinks first.Del

They keep going round quoting this 60{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} which is probably nearer to 6{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}
as I havn’t come across anyone who has agreed to it yet.Might be worth asking for Rudi’s take on the situation, as they appear to be starting to apply pressure to push this through.
plus all the 18 month old rejections are worthy of a little more attention, might even be worth taking a staw poll to see how many others have recieved theirs yet.
Perhaps it might be an idea to ask how many think that they would be paid for submitting an invoice 18 months after a job had been done.
Their are still a few people out there who believe in the tooth fairy I suppose.
Could it be that more and more indies are opening accounts with other spares suppliers because they are getting more than a little pissed off with CDSL and the strong arm tactics they are now just starting to employ. The term thin end of the wedge seems to spring to mind
Their own Rep Mike Thomas told me of his fears of this very thing happening right back when the work switched from Nesn to CDSL how right he was. I must get the part numer of his crystal ball before I change suppliers meself
