You could temporarily fit a plug on a cooker to do the test but obviously if you did a functional test you would have to make sure you didn’t have several elements on at once and exceed 13 amps.

And you are saying that that proves the working people are lazy? It could not possibly be that they lost their jobs when manufacturing was moved to some third world country where labour is cheaper?

ParticipantRe: Indesit WIDL 126 Washer / Dryer
If you trace the wires from the heater element you should see they go to small round or square devices mounted nearby. These devices will be either control thermostats or thermal fuses. Each of these will show a short circuit meter reading if working, open circuit if failed. You need to remove one connection from any pair of terminals before testing with the ohm meter or you will get misleading results.

ParticipantRe: Indesit WIDL 126 Washer / Dryer
The heater for drying is different to that for washing so the 2 faults are probably not related. If the washer is not heating I would generally expect the machine to stick on wash and never continue on to the rinses. Is this what’s happening?

I keep hearing this argument that British workers are lazy, don’t turn up half the time etc. I just don’t believe things have changed so much since I was an employee in 1997. Most people were reliable and hard working, they had to be or they were out on their ear at the next round of redundancies. At least the migrant workers help keep me in work as most of them are very hard on their washing machines. One household burned out 2 Hotpoint motors in the space of a week 😆

You really need to get yourself a copy of the IEE Code of Practice, ISBN:0-85296-776-4.
Insulation Resistance:
Class 1 over 3kW___ 0.3 megohm
Other Class 1 ___ 1.0 meg
Class 2 ___ 2.0 meg
Class 3 ___ 250 kilohmEarth Continuity:
Resistance shall not exceed 0.1 ohm + resistance of mains flex earth conductor. Appliances with long flexes like Class 1 vacuum cleaners may show as a fail on the tester but you measure the cable length and calculate its resistance based on estimated CSA. For example 0.75mm cable has a resistance of 0.026 ohm per metre.Phidom

Hi Madmac,
Yes, same here, last few weeks have been very poor. I’m seriously thinking of going back in Tescos to see if they’ve got a job stacking shelves! A few months ago I did a C&G course on PAT testing and I’m planning to offer this as a service to offices, hotels etc. At the moment I’m not happy with the hardware and software I’ve purchased so the venture is on hold.Phidom
ParticipantRe: Bosch WVT1260GB bearing change
Renewing the spider is an expensive way to do the repair but quite easy to do. I would suggest you remove the spider and examine the drum shaft before you buy any parts. Sometimes the front bearing breaks up and damages the shaft surface where the seal runs. If this has happened the damaged shaft will tear up the new seal.
You will almost certainly need Torx bits but otherwise only standard tools are required.Phidom

£5.35 here, same as Martin quoted. Last week I ordered an Oreck motor fan housing ORK97534302 at £19.32 + VAT. The price from Oreck themselves would have been £8.66 + postage but they wanted proof that I’m a qualified electrician which I’m not.

Interesting. I was in our Elgin Tesco the other day and noticed there were no Whitegoods on sale. They usually have a few washers, dryers and fridges.

ParticipantRe: Pattern Heaters: A cautionary tale 🙁
I’ve sometimes wondered about the thermisters in Hotpoint heaters. I often find when I’m trying to remove the plug from these the whole thing comes out of the heater. When this happens I push it back and tighten the heater nut a bit tighter but I wonder if these thermisters ever pop out?

It is quite an unusual looking seal, probably specially made for Hotpoint.

Have ordered a kit plus a couple of seals so at least I will have them eventually. Incidentally, I thought the kit from Connect was expensive at £20.18 until I looked at the Maddocks site where it’s listed at £29.27 😯

Yes, so do I but I’m trying to use up some bearings from obsolete bearing kits. Connect are expensive for the complete kit but everyone else I’ve tried is out of stock. 🙁
