ParticipantRe: Should of stayed in bed
One of those Sods Law days? I’ve been doing a drum spider change on a Zanussi Jetsystem and everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. It’s one of those jobs where the customer has stated that my initial estimate is her upper spending limit. If I find more problems, resulting in a higher bill, she will cut her losses and buy a new machine. In such cases I often end up doing the extra work for no extra charge, rather than lose the job.
When I got it apart I found the inner drum had cut right through the front half of the tub. I had got a secondhand tub so I replaced the front half. This meant transferring the door seal and concrete from the customers machine. I removed the seal without noting exactly where it fits. 😳 There is an arrow showing the top of the tub front but no corresponding mark on the door seal. I tried to judge 180 degrees from said mark and tried to position the drain groove of the seal accordingly. Needless to say, I managed to get it a few degrees out so the drain groove does not work too well.
There was lots of plastic swarf everywhere and I tried to get as much as I could out but some was still in hoses, filter housing etc. When the machine was back together the jetsystem jet was not working. I took off the circulation pump and cleaned that out but that only cured the fault for a few seconds. I guessed that there was probably a blockage in the coupling to the door seal as that is the most restrictive part. I didn’t want to dismantle that though as it has single-use hose clips and I don’t have any spares. I decided to try blasting the hose through with mains water. I managed to rig up a hosepipe to the bottom of the Jetsystem hose but then had the problem of catching the water, as I would otherwise flood the workshop, due to the missing hose on the circulation pump. I wedged an old ice cream tub under the Jetsystem jet and tried a quick blast with the mains water. I suppose the water came out at a more horizontal angle than normal due to the higher pressure so most of it still missed the ice cream tub and ended up on the floor. 😆Phidom
ParticipantRe: Bearings question?
If you can find a big long bolt and some big washers, old bearings, sockets etc. you can use the bolt to press in the new bearings. The professional tools for fitting bearings consist of various cups, collars, and spacers together with a suitable bolt but it is possible to improvise an equivalent arrangement using a bit of ingenuity.

You must renew both bearings and the seal. It is false economy to do just the bearing that has failed and you would probably have to do the job again after a few months. In some cases you also need to renew the shaft/drum support. This is because bits of broken bearing sometimes damage the surface on which the seal runs. This surface damage will in turn wreck the new seal, leading to premature failure of the new bearings. For information on how to do the job we would need the make and model of your machine.

I would take off the sump hose again and make sure there’s not a plastic bag or something getting sucked against the tub outlet.

I think the older machine will have had a smaller drum and smaller door seal aperture. You really need a much newer donor machine.

Perhaps a detached or burnt out neutral wire. Could also be a short circuit somewhere. A megger tester would be useful if you have one.

ParticipantRe: Bosch WAA28165 -sealed drum?
Have you checked that you can get anyone out to repair the ISE under warranty if required? The place 20 miles away may not be willing to come that far. We have recently been told about some new Zanussi machines that don’t come with sealed drums. You could consider these:

ZWF14380W

ParticipantRe: Worst Week Ever
Yes, same here, Mike. I tend not to answer the phone in the evenings as I find it hard to be cheerful and respectful to customers who ring at 10 oclock at night. No doubt I lose business but I work to live rather than the other way round.

Give EMW a ring, they should be able to advise.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWM 6163 motor / tacho fault?
Yes I was thinking Bosch and I found a scrap motor but the tacho coil only reads about 16 ohms. 😕

ParticipantRe: Zanussi Electrolux ZCE7610W
They have introduced a new type of switch, part Number 3890832011. There is a slight change in the wiring compared to the old switch but hopefully it comes with instructions. If not, we can advise you further.

What make of motor is it? Whirlpool usually have Ceset motors but now I have looked at the photos I realise it is a different sort.

Have you looked at the error code thread?
